SUNY-Stony Brook ABSN Class of 2020
That's not true! During interviews they mentioned a high percentage of the alternates are offered spots in the program, and notice is often (but not always) provided fairly last minute. If the ABSN at SB is your dream, don't lose hope. I'm sorry you're on the alt list, but, it's so much better than a denial letter. Look at this as a positive, and I wish you the best of luck.

OH yes @futurenursing4! I've been checking my application and solar account on a normal basis in hopes there will be some clue on status. I was in such a panic for the math and the writing sample that I have no idea. The topic and questions weren't difficult but the time went so quickly and it's hard to remain authentic and accurate in such a setting. We shall see! How are you feeling?

Yes, good luck to everyone tomorrow! From previous years' threads, there are 4-5 people in our group and they'll ask us 5-8 questions. The interview is about a full hour, and we have about 50 minutes to complete the math and writing portions, leaving 10 minutes of down time. Are you hearing something different? I'm so excited. Anyone else dealing with nerves tonight?!

@EileenC thanks so much for answering our questions, and congrats on getting through the program! Can you shed any light on your weekly schedule? You mentioned clinicals were 1 day per week throughout the summer, and then twice a week for the rest of the program. What hours were you in classes and clinicals? Is it 12 months straight through or is there a little break during the holidays/new year's?

@futurenursing4 - The email came from Jan Kavazanjian who works with the admissions office at Stony Brook, I received it at 1:38pm on Friday (1/12), and it said "...you've been selected for an onsite interview." The waiting game is the worst, but don't let it mess with you too much. It's still so early! I wish you the best of luck.

Thank you! I'll definitely share my experience following the interview. This is just the first wave that went out, and as others mentioned, it went out much earlier than previous years. Don't worry about not hearing back yet. I'd be surprised if they don't send out more this week or early next week.

SUNY-Stony Brook ABSN Class of 2020
Graduated from Stony Brook with a 3.85, but a year in law school brought me to a 3.5; my science prereq GPA is a 4.0. Besides stats, which I have a B in, I have all As in my prereqs, and I'm finishing up micro this semester. I'm a yoga teacher, and volunteered in a nursing home for a few months, and a rough pregnancy and delivery is what brought me to nursing. I would love to work in a hospital until school starts (wishful positive thinking!). Has anyone had trouble finding work in a hospital? If so, how did you get in? I've been applying to pretty much all hospital jobs in LI and NYC for months and haven't gotten one call back. It's kind of shocking. Also, anyone take the TEAS? SBU said they don't require it but a great score would bulk up the application, so, I'm regretting not taking it now.

Thanks for the helpful responses! I'm in NY and having a hard time finding ANY job in any nearby hospitals; even receptionist jobs are competitive in hospitals around here. Working in a hospital for hands on experience would be ideal right now. I'll hold off on studying and maybe brush up on A&P before I begin my program.

Portage learning prerequisites
It took me 5 months to complete the chemistry class. Here's what I had going on: 1. I worked full time and have a toddler; 2. I decided to take A&P 1 and 2 during the summer, so, I put chem on pause for about 11-12 weeks; 3. I wanted an A so I was spending about two weeks on each module because I'm incredibly weak in math (in retrospect, I could have spent less time on each but I was afraid of how well I understood and could apply the material); 4. I was dedicated to the material and really put effort into doing well, and this required lots of time for me on youtube making sure I understood difficult topics. I think someone who is semi-strong in math could get away with spending 3 days per module for an A. I haven't taken A&P, micro or psych through Portage but imagine they'd be easier than chem. As you mentioned you plan to make this your full-time job, it won't be too hard to accomplish and will just take dedication. Good luck!

Prepping for nursing school
Is there anything I can do to lighten the mental workload prior to attending nursing school? Would practicing NCLEX questions help (eg each question I come across would probably require me to research the question and all answers and I'd therefore familiarize myself with some material), or, could I buy the books early prior to starting classes? Is this ridiculous given how hands on nursing school is? What do you wish you had done prior to attending? Any other sage advice?
