SUNY-Downstate summer '09--Introduce yourselves please!

Nursing Students General Students

Published

From the pre-nursing board there were a number of us waiting to hear from Downstate, and by now quite a few have been accepted!

So please, introduce yourselves here in the Nursing Student forum, and let's continue the discussion as we prepare to start classes in 3 months.

Where are you holding so far? Medical clearance, CPR, supplies, figuring out your finances and schedules for the next year... let's discuss!

I got the holds lifted... The Monday class is full, but the registrar is trying to get me in to that class anyway. I hope it works out.

I got in the Monday class. Phew.

Excellent!:yeah: Can't wait to meet everyone.

hey, i'm randi, i’ll be starting in june as well!!

this thread has been really helpful - thanks everyone for your input - especially for the textbooks

when i registered earlier this week, mondays intro. to physical assessment class was already closed:(

i spoke to a faculty member from the nursing department who emailed my request to the registrar.. i hope i get in

for those who will be driving, i hear in order to park in the lot we would need to purchase weekly tickets in advance. i'm going to find out more about it when i go on thursday. does anyone know anything about this?

I see that there are 60 students in the incoming class, up from 40.

Randi,

I am driving also. Yes for the Downstate's garage you have to stay in line on Thursday's mornings and get weekly park tickets on first come-first serve basis. However, there is on more parking lot that is not Downstate's.

Their parking rates are $115-$150 a month (depends on what kind of car you have).

If you need more info private message me!

I cannot believe we are counting days, not months any more. I am nervous, especially on Pathophysiology, Pharmacology and OB GYN. These three courses are killer. However, we should hope for the best this summer.

Has anyone started reading any of course?

I started reading Patho. I looked through the books for Semester II but didnt' really start reading them. So far the health assessment and critical thinking texts that we'll need for semester I didn't come yet. I'd really like to start reading them soon...

I'm more nervous about Semester II than Semester I... at least with semester I I can get a headstart now, but it's really too much to prepare for ALL the summer classes in the four weeks we have left. We'll be taking more classes, having much longer days plus clinicals. The good news is it's only 6 weeks and then things get lighter in the fall...

Hi all -

I have a couple of friends in the current Downstate class so I have been pestering them with all sorts of questions.

They said that it is not necessary to buy the Patho book - his powerpoint slides are very comprehensive and no one really even opened the book. The others we will need for the classes, but the book for Kitchener's class is apparently not worth having afterwards, so borrow it if you can.

In terms of stethoscopes, blood pressure cuffs, penlights, shoes, etc, they recommended a few places:

- B&R Uniform in Manhattan

- Barnes and Noble textbook store on 17th St. (in the back)

- allheart.com

They also said that we are told to buy nursing shoes but white sneakers are more attractive :) and just as good for your feet. Some teachers are sticklers about the shoes but they managed to get by with just the sneakers.

Hope this helps!

Joanna

The Nursing Process book I bought an old edition and paid like $5 for it, so that's a good thing. The Patho book was expensive... :( What a shame that I won't be using it. I have to agree with the reviews--it's a lousy book.
