  1. Hello - I am a new grad looking, ideally, for an L&D position. However, it looks like I am about to be offered a postpartum job with the promise to be moved to L&D once I have some experience. I'm totally up for it, but don't know a lot about what a postpartum job entails. I would love to hear from a postpartum nurse about what their job duties are, what shifts are like, etc, especially on the night shift. I know that hospitals differ, but do the postpartum nurses usually staff the well baby nursery? If there are lactation consultants on staff, do the nurses still help out with breastfeeding? Any info would be so appreciated! Thanks.
  2. Hello to all SUNY Downstate Accelerated BSN alum - I started the program this summer and have been extremely disappointed with the content, professors and administration. I am about to finish the second summer semester and honestly feel like I haven't learned much at all. I'm getting concerned about being prepared to actually work as a nurse after graduation, so I would love to hear about people's experiences in the workplace - are you really behind other new grads? Did you have enough knowledge to start working out of the gate? If not, what did you do to supplement your degree from Downstate? And lastly, did you get enough from this program to comfortably pass the NCLEX? Any information would be great appreciated! Thank you!
  3. Hi all - I have a couple of friends in the current Downstate class so I have been pestering them with all sorts of questions. They said that it is not necessary to buy the Patho book - his powerpoint slides are very comprehensive and no one really even opened the book. The others we will need for the classes, but the book for Kitchener's class is apparently not worth having afterwards, so borrow it if you can. In terms of stethoscopes, blood pressure cuffs, penlights, shoes, etc, they recommended a few places: - B&R Uniform in Manhattan - Barnes and Noble textbook store on 17th St. (in the back) - allheart.com They also said that we are told to buy nursing shoes but white sneakers are more attractive :) and just as good for your feet. Some teachers are sticklers about the shoes but they managed to get by with just the sneakers. Hope this helps! Joanna
  4. Hello all, I am currently researching CNM programs in the US and would love to get people's experiences, thoughts, etc. on program content and philosophy. I am looking for a program focused on the midwifery model of care rather than medical. The school does not have to be homebirth based, though that would be great. I'm mainly looking for a program that leans towards non-interventionist, non over-medicalized, encouraging of alternative forms of healing and wellness, etc. Any direction would be great! Thanks!
  5. Hello all! Just stumbled across this site and am very happy to find it. I'm really looking forward to starting soon after waiting for so long. As far as I can tell, we only need the first 2 Hep B shots to be able to register. I also heard nothing about needing to do the PPD at Downstate. Mine wasn't accepted but they told me it was because it was at the end of August and therefore not within 6 months exactly....arrgghhh! Finally got the second one done and will have the second Hep B tomorrow so I hope to register Wednesday.
