SUNY Downstate ABSN 2020-2021

Updated:   Published

Hi everyone,

I've started this thread so we can discuss and share our experiences applying to SUNY's ABSN program for 2020. This is my second time applying. I waited till the very last day of the deadline to submit my application last year (I knowww) since I had taken the TEAS and had just gotten the results. However, I've already submitted my application for the upcoming year and hope to get a call for an interview. Looking forward to chatting with you all.

Sidenote: I really like the upgrade they did to the online application. So much more user-friendly.

Congrats, all! Could someone pls shine light on what to expect on the interview? Also, for those admitted, what are your stats like? I just saw the app deadline was extended again to Jan 3. ?

The interview was very laid back, nothing to worry about just be yourself! The two women I interviewed with were great, they definitely make you feel comfortable and not like they're out to get you. There were two other candidates in my interview and we take turns answering questions. You do not answer the same questions as everyone else. What I also really liked about the interview was that they take your personal statement into account. I wrote about my experience teaching in Thailand and was surprised when they asked me more about that during the interview. To me, that means they take the time to really look into their candidates. The writing sample is not done on a computer so make sure you bring a pen/pencil. It's a short writing prompt.

My stats are 3.57 undergrad GPA and 4.0 pre-req GPA. No prior healthcare experience, I graduated with my first bachelors in communications and journalism.

Hope this helps!

@lobo92 Thank you for elaborating on the interview process! Can you give some examples as to what specific questions were asked?

@lobo92, thank you! May I ask what your ATI TEAS were? I ask b/c I have a 3.3 undergrad GPA, a 3.7 grad GPA, a 4.0 in all prereqs, and I believe I wrote a stellar statement yet I haven't even been called in for an interview ?

@NurseDan was your application forwarded to the committee? I'm having the same issue as well. I think they're going in the order the applications were received. I was told the submission date wouldn't affect admissions, so that's a bit of a bummer.

Specializes in ER.

Similar situation here. But my status says, "office of student admission evaluator review"

@LizzyHal, the homepages says "Screening in Process" and within the status section it says "Under Program Review"...

I got an 87% on my TEAS - 94% math, 92% english, 78% science (2 points under their "preferred" score but they still took it!)

@LizzyHal nothing that will trip you up, basics like "why do you want to be a nurse, what qualities would make you a good nurse" etc. But also be prepared for questions that ask about a weakness or a time that was difficult. The questions aren't meant to trick you I felt like they genuinely just wanted to get a feel for you and get to know you better!

Congratulations to all accepted today. I still hope for good news.

I noticed there is still a pending action item under my status which they said was resolved and should have been removed by now but it is still there... le sigh

@lobo92, nice. I got an overall 85% (81% Reading, 97% Math, 87% Science, and a 71% Language)... still not entirely sure why I haven’t been called in for at least an interview... :/

Sounds like you fit all the criteria! They extended the deadline again so I wouldn't worry too much about it (easier said than done I know) they may be backed up with that as well as the holidays. Good luck to you!

Hi everyone,

Congrats to everyone who got accepted! I also received my acceptance letter this morning.

I was just accepted myself! I want to get a group started for next year’s class, but it’s my first day back at work after the holidays and there’s a lot of pre-matriculation stuff to take care of! I’ll talk to you all soon!

Upon going into the application portal, I too noticed a ton of pre-matriculation stuff to be done. There is a student data form that needs to be filled out and handed in but I can't seem to find it. Please let me know when you start that group :)!

Good luck to everyone else!

@NurseDan Same here ?. My application status finally changed from Student Admission Review to Under Program Review 2 weeks ago, but still no call for an interview. My overall score was a 89%, but I wonder if my undergrad gpa is what’s tripping me up.

The extended deadline has me more worried than relieved. Does that mean most of the applications they’ve received so far aren’t good enough to be admitted? (Or is it just an easy way to get more application fee $ ?)

I just got into a different program that starts in Jan, so I don’t even know what I’d do if I did get called for an interview...

Glad other people are getting calls though! Hope everyone has a happy new year!
