Hi everyone,
I've started this thread so we can discuss and share our experiences applying to SUNY's ABSN program for 2020. This is my second time applying. I waited till the very last day of the deadline to submit my application last year (I knowww) since I had taken the TEAS and had just gotten the results. However, I've already submitted my application for the upcoming year and hope to get a call for an interview. Looking forward to chatting with you all.
Sidenote: I really like the upgrade they did to the online application. So much more user-friendly.

I agree with this.
Also during my interview it seemed that the director quickly made her decision right then and there. There was a passing comment she made to her colleague that it doesn't take her long to make up her mind ?
Haha I agree! I wish they’d just tell us unofficially instead of making us wait for the registrar/official channels to work. Oh well.

Hi,
I was able to call them and they were able to issue a refund. If your problem is anything like mine, your first payment should've went through and it just might be the application portal being buggy, I made the second payment to make sure I submit my application asap. To this day, my application still says Screening in process even after the interview. I learned to just wait for any email updates (or calls for interview) regarding status of your application and occasionally checking the portal instead of spamming refresh on it.

Would you be so kind and elaborate on what you mean by the Maimonides? Is this a satellite hospital? Where would you recommend most doing clinicals?
I think I'm gnna try to take pharma and patho this spring to get ahead- hopefully they'll transfer over, and if not - at least I've got studying done!
Also, just to clarify/confirm - all of our science prerequisites (Microbio, A&P 1+2, Chem) are not averaged into the BSN cGPA? So, does this mean we all start with a 0.0 GPA? That's a huge bummer ?
And finally, do you have any words of wisdom to share or tips or even things you wished you knew before you started?
Thanks again for paying it forward! I'll be sure to do the same if I get in ?
Clinicals, probably just like your previous college courses, are hit-or-miss situation. In our experiences there way more hits than misses and pretty much everyone is satisfied. College of Nursing is currently running two clinical honors programs to which you can apply during the summer session before starting rotations. This means that you lock yourself in with either Maimonides or Downstate Medical Center, which are two separate entities. Both include some extra work in terms of evidence based research/quality improvement projects. As I can speak of the first one, we spend all three clinical semesters at Maimonides shadowing and working with nurses on the floor, sharing their caseload somewhat instead of working with the clinical instructors connected to the college of nursing. In contrast, you would be registering for rotation spots in a variety of hospitals every semester if you are not in the honors program. Our clinical experience is more tailored by the hospital's department of nursing education with an end goal of hiring us. It is a whole different experience and it really depends on your preferences.
I came to downstate bracing for impact (summer semester), and with the understanding that anything is possible, and if things do not meet my expectations, it will be means to an end. Some of my classmates wished they knew that many courses will be taught online, some others had hoped for less self-directed learning and more guidance. The greatest tip is to stick together as a cohort, share your work/notes, good sources or study helps, etc. If you try to tough it our by yourself, it will be rough. Strength in numbers!
In my understanding, all your prerequisite GPA goes bye bye. I'm also pretty sure that graduate nursing schools only care about your BSN GPA.

Can you elaborate in the free clinic please? I would love to do that. I can draw labs and do Ekgs and interpret. Thank you
The Brooklyn free clinic is a volunteer opportunity every Wednesday evening. There is a couple administrative positions that are year long which do get involved on the floor as well, but you can apply as a volunteer and I think you could take part in it 3 or 4 times during one of the semesters. You get some extra training, have an opportunity to triage and assess, and to work with medical students to provide services to the patients. Of course everything under supervision. Any skills you could bring to the table would be appreciated!
I did- I received an email yesterday morning that a decision was available and through that email and correspondence within the admissions portal, I found out that I was accepted. I'm feeling incredibly grateful and humbled.
I didn't see anyone else post about receiving a decision so I hope this will give other applicants an indication that the program is working through applications. I'm pulling for everyone in this forum.

I interviewed recently and asked this question. We were told that once a candidate has interviewed, their application is moved along in the process. In this way, it seems that they do not wait for the application deadline nor for all interviews to occur before making admissions decisions. We weren't given an exact timeframe but were told that it should be relatively soon after the holidays.
