SUNY Downstate ABSN 2020-2021

Updated:   Published

Hi everyone,

I've started this thread so we can discuss and share our experiences applying to SUNY's ABSN program for 2020. This is my second time applying. I waited till the very last day of the deadline to submit my application last year (I knowww) since I had taken the TEAS and had just gotten the results. However, I've already submitted my application for the upcoming year and hope to get a call for an interview. Looking forward to chatting with you all.

Sidenote: I really like the upgrade they did to the online application. So much more user-friendly.

Hi all, received a voicemail from the nursing program regarding interviews. I was able to call back and schedule the interview next Tuesday afternoon! They did offer me a spot for tomorrow's group but it was a very last minute notice.

Congrats and good luck!

I’ll be there next Tuesday afternoon, too. See ya then! ?

Thanks so much for all this info, @machamurse! This is definitely helpful/reassuring info. Would you be willing to share a little bit about the program? How have you liked it so far? Biggest pros/cons?

Thanks! ?

I like the program itself. The con is the occasional hiccups, but I believe they are there due to the accelerated nature of the program and due to the fact, like healthcare itself, healthcare education is changing all the time. This comes with a pro at the same time. From my perspective I see an improvement for the better every semester as the administration gets our feedback. They're very receptive and switch things up if possible i.e. per our request the on-site courses this spring were stacked within one day a week to reduce commute time.

Now, the biggest pro is that I am very impressed with their admission choices as I'm surrounded by some of the most motivated and diverse people I've ever met. Also, once you get to interviews ask about the clinical honors program and Brooklyn Free Clinic, both amazing initiatives by downstate.

@machamurse are you sure that it's first come first serve? I was told that it wasn't and now feel a bit nervous because I submitted my application the week before the deadline.

It seems like it was was rolling admission but I may be wrong. Miss-communications and changes happen. One way or another, I submitted mine last minute as well and I'm here. Even if you are waitlisted, we had a student taken off the alternate list the day of orientation. Keep your hopes up and your phone ready for a phone call!

Do people get notification if they haven't been admitted? I haven't gotten called for an interview, but if I didn't even make the cut-off for that, then I'd like to know so I can look into other schools, instead of waiting another month or two.

Thanks so much, @machamurse !

Good luck / hope it went well today, everyone! How were the interviews?

I do not believe they will let anyone know until much later. Also, the deadline for the program hasn't even happened yet, so I don't think they're anywhere near done inviting people to interview!

Question for those who got called/emailed for an interview:

What does your application status say under the status portion of the application?

Mine just changed from "File forwarded to Program for Review" to "Under Program Review". I'm trying to figure out if that's a positive development or if it's inconsequential.

Thanks!

Good point! I'm just being impatient and paranoid because my status still says "Screening in Progress" / "Application Status: Office of Student Admissions Evaluator Review".

My undergrad grades from 14+ years ago were mediocre, (though my prereqs from the last 2 years have been good), and my TEAS Science score was meh so I'm assuming they're picking the strongest applications first to interview, which totally makes sense.

Regardless, I'm happy to cheer on everyone else here though!

I received a call for an interview for next Thursday. I wonder what type of questions might be asked. And what kind of writing sample for the first 30 minutes.

@machamurse - thank you for providing so much insight! It's very kind of you. Would you be able to explain a "week in the life" or maybe breakdown what we can expect our schedule to be like in the summer, fall, and spring? Also, do you know if Downstate accepts patho or pharma as a transfer? The current student handbook says so, but admissions doesn't really provide a straightforward answer. Would you even recommend pre-students to take this before starting the program (to get ahead)? And finally, how do all of the science prerequisites transfer? Are they just transferred over as "passing grades" or are they actually incorporated into your Downstate ABSN GPA?

@lobo92 / @moreteaplease - how was your interview? Would you be able to provide any insight into what it's like? Congratulations, everyone! ?

Mine still says "Application was forwarded to the program".

Huh, I guess that means that too much shouldn't be read into what the status says. Thank you for sharing!
