Summer 2018- UT Health Science center pacesetter BSN program

Published

Hello Everyone,

I am preparing myself to apply for Summer 2018 pacesetter BSN program. We can use this forum for Summer 2018 applicants. I am in the process of taking Hesi exam. I have completed all my prerequisite courses needed for the program.

Little bit about me:

BS in Microbiology in 2005 -GPA (3.05)

MPH degree in Epidemiology in 2012-GPA (3.85)

Associate degree of Science in 2017-GPA (4.0)

Hesi test-will be taking it in August

Working full time with City Health department as an epidemiologist specialist since last five years. I am also a mom of two boys.

Got accepted to MUSC college of nursing program but declined it. Also got accepted to Johns Hopkins Entry into Masters of nursing program for Fall 2017 but had to deffer it to Fall 2018 due to financial circumstances.

Trying to apply for the in-state school due to affordable tuition as well as easy commute.

I really hope i can get into UT Health Science center pacesetter program as it's my first option as it's closest to me as well as it's affordable and one of the best programs in Texas.

Rgo2018: Admissions Criteria

Here's the link to the website. You can dig around on the site to find the immunization criteria from here: Application

One important thing: to be considered for admission, you must first apply to Sam Houston State University through ApplyTexas and be accepted for the semester you want to begin nursing (Fall 2018). After acceptance, apply specifically to the nursing program. This took me about 4 weeks. So from today, you still have time.

They have pre-nursing/applicant walk-in appointments every morning at the Woodlands location. The pre-nursing contact person is Joanna Blythe.

You've stated that: "They admit based on an exact formula and their staff is very accessible."

I am not seeing any formulas on their website. Is this something that was a word-of-mouth?

Question to those who have applied to UTHealth: Have you applied for a scholarship prior to receiving acceptance or should this be done after official acceptance?

Thank you!

Rgo2018: Yes. I spoke with the advisor and she said they go by a formula. She would not tell me what it was (she said the formula itself is confidential), but she did run through some "what if" scenarios with my stats. I still have a few classes outstanding, most of which I'm enrolled in currently. So she ran through how I would rank if I got 5 A's. And again with 4 A's and a B. That sort of thing. Then she told me how that stacked up against the last applicant pool. Of course the current applicant pool could be stronger... but at least I have a good idea of what scores have been competitive historically.

at the info session they said feel free to apply before acceptance.

If you can swing the drive, also apply to Sam Houston State University. They've recently moved their entire nursing program from Huntsville to The Woodlands. This is their second year in The Woodlands. They have 80 spots. I'm applying there and they are super straightforward. They admit based on an exact formula and their staff is very accessible. I know exactly where I stand with them.

A few differences from UTH:

1. They accept the TEAS rather than the HESI.

2. MMR, Varicella, Tetorifice, and three doses of HepB (or titers) are due at the time of application.

The application period for Fall 2018 opened March 1 and closes on May 1. They are pretty competitive (as most programs are these days), but a TEAS score around 87 or better and science/pre-nursing GPA's around 3.7 should get you a spot. Additionally, they do give a small applicant ranking boost for a prior bachelor's degree, an EMT certification, or an LPN or CNA license. They are VERY transparent and if you make the cut, you get a spot. It's a traditional BSN program and they don't go summers.

Have you already taken the TEAS? It looks like from their website you have to have taken it 30 days prior to the application period that opened in March.

I wonder how many people are on the waitlist

I took the TEAS the same week I took my A&P2 final exam... I figured that was my best shot at a good A&P score. That was in December. But I don't recall the exam needing to be taken ahead of the application period. I just thought that if you chose to take the exam during the application period, you could only take it once during that period. They will super-score the TEAS. So if I were to take it again tomorrow and try to get the ENGLISH section of my TEAS a little bit higher, I could... but only once during the application period.

Ok...that makes sense. Thank you so much! :)

I refresh my email so many times in one day it's crazy. My heart can't take it any more lol has any one heard anything?

You're not alone, don't fret. Have not heard anything yet.

Hey guys, I am a current UTH student so I wanted to give some insight. While I know this is probably the most anxious you've ever been (trust me I totally get it), keep in mind that there are usually over 1200 applicants. It is going to take a little while to get back to everyone, just be patient and remember that everything happens for a reason and there are many people who apply more than once and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

On another note, if yall have any questions feel free to ask. Always happy to help!

I go to Sam Houston currently and applied for their nursing program for Spring 18 but was waitlisted and they do have a points system for deciding who gets in. Good GPA's or TEAS scores gets you points, or if you go to the school you get more points, etc etc. They are moving to the woodlands and I believe they are now accepting 120 students per application period. Its a great school but I've heard its disorganized.
