Summer 2012 - Check in

Published

OK, since enrollment for Summer 2012 is close to starting, I figured I'd get the ball rolling for those of us who are taking courses this summer.

What courses are you taking? Is this your first time taking the class? When will you apply for nursing school?

Good luck to you all and let's keep each other updated on our summer classes in this thread :D

I'm freaking a little. Our school is closed due to the storms. We have no email communication with the teacher. I do have his phone number but I don't know if I'll be able to take my final. So much stress!

Oh man, leenak, that's terrible! Hope they get it resolved soon!!! 3 and a half weeks left to go...yay!!! Just had our first exam in Phlebotomy. They only do a midterm and final exam. The rest of the grade is based on your success of blood draws. I have thoroughly enjoyed this class. I feel like I'm learning a great skill that will be helpful once I'm in the nursing program. Getting good at hitting the vein every time now :D

I have a wonderful Anatomy professor. I wish he taught Physiology, I'd love to have him again next semester. He's straight-forward, no nonsense, practical and very fair. It's a tough class, but he's so positive about wanting his students to succeed. Our test next week is on the Respiratory system, Heart & Circulatory system, Digestive system & Lymphatic system. Whew! A lot to memorize in a week.

Psychology & Healthy Lifestyles are a breeze. Almost every student at school is required to take these, no matter what your major. It's like being in a high school class, due to the way they're taught. I don't mind. I love easy A's, so bring it on!!!

I will be SO happy to end the semester. I'm getting married on August 10th, so I've got a lot going on right now between school & the wedding. What a relief it will be when it's all over :)

Lovie12 congrats that's awesome!!

Hey my name is Jessica, i'm new in this blog and i'm doing some research because i'm almost done with my requirements at MDC, just 2 more semesters. So i was wondering if anybody know about how is the waiting list to get into the Medical Campus at MDC. Thanks for any further info that somebody can give.

Hey Sopranokris,

I've been thinking about taking a phlebotomy class myself. I'll be starting the nursing program in August so I don't know when I'll have time. Anyway, I was wondering how you practice blood draws. I mean, is it on actual people or dummy arms? Congrats on the wedding BTW.

Hi MissRN2b!

In our Phlebotomy class, we practice on each other. We started drawing blood the 2nd night of class. Since then, I've done 24 draws. We started with vacutainer draws, then syringe and now we're on butterflies & finger punctures for BSGs. I feel like a pro now! We're doing clinicals next week at the hospital, but we're only allowed to observe.

Once we finish the semester, we do our externship at the hospital next semester, where we do draws at the hospital, under the supervision of a phlebotomist. Luckily, my lab professor will also be my instructor at the hospital. We have to do a minimum of 125 draws during our externship before we can take our licensing exam.

It's not as scary as you think. It's actually quite fun! The arm bruising from other students making mistakes is not so fun, but it goes away after a few days. It's amazing how fast people learn what NOT to do :D

Good luck on the wedding SopranoKris! I was finishing up my MS when I got married and it definitely was hectic.

Our semester is offically over (I think?). I am getting an A in Chemistry. It was a rough 6 weeks. Long hours, long days, lots of stress. I'm glad its over with.

Thanks so much, Leenak! I'm so excited to get married :D

Congrats on the hard-earned A in Chem! That's a tough course...even tougher when it's accelerated in the summer!!! Great job! :yeah:

Thanks Nurse2b7337, blessing with your nursing success.

2 more weeks to go and this summer semester will be over....hallelujah!!! :D I'm sooo ready for a break!

Registered for fall semester. I'm totally bummed that I cannot get into my Phlebotomy Externship in the fall. The course usually meets at night, but there are 3 days at the beginning of the semester when it meets during the day. Unfortunately, those 3 days conflicted with the Physiology & Microbiology classes I'm enrolled in. I couldn't register without getting the signature of the instructor & department chair. Got the instructor's signature, but the department chair was on vacation for 3 weeks. By the time she got back to me, the course was full and they won't add any more seats, even though I attempted to enroll the first day. UGH!

However, it all works out for the best. I was able to enroll in another Health Services course that still gives me points for admission to nursing school on my application. It also saves me having to do 18 hours a week in the hospital on top of taking 6 classes...yikes! I'd never have time to study!!! So, I'll take my six classes and then do my externship in January. That way, I'll be done with my pre-reqs and have plenty of time to devote to working in the hospital during my externship. Whew! Crisis averted :D

We did clinicals at the hospital this week in phlebotomy and I really enjoyed making rounds with the phlebotomy team, meeting patients, touring the lab, etc. The people who work in the lab are a riot. I know I'm really going to enjoy my time there. It seems the nurses and the phlebotomists don't particularly care for each other, which makes me feel like I'm going to be in a tough position if I say I'm going to nursing school. I'm going to need to walk a fine line between these groups. Gee, it seems the sand-box mentally never goes away, does it? LOL ;)

Looking forward to fall!

Currently have an A in A&P2. All the hard lecture tests in my opinion, are over with. I am worried about the 2nd practical (mostly because of the short time).

orientation july 26th, looking forward to it. Also looking foward to august 16th when my final summer class is over... that means from august 16th-sept (whenever school starts) I will finally be able to enjoy summer!
