Suffolk County Community College 2017 Applicants

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Starting the thread for those anxious applicants trying to get a read on this year's pool of candidates...

So who is willing to post what they've scored?

Here's mine:

A&P 1: A

A&P 2: B+

Eng 1: A

Eng 2: B+

Micro: ___

Psych: A

Stats: C- (blah!)

TEAS: 78

Not particularly found of the revision to the rubric.

So what are you holding???

I would apply again in the fall and see what happens. I'm shocked an 82 and all A's didn't get you in. I would definitely appeal it too. Also, some people may decide not to do the program and once the deposit deadline passes, maybe you can still get in? It makes no sense to me...I'm so sorry :(

That's all good advice. I'm also shocked as Advanced gives you like 20 additional points. Along with the As, your grade should be up there. This process seemed to make sense, but it's so convoluted than the previous years. Who really knows if they even stick to their own rubric score. I also didn't know that you have preference being a Suffolk resident. I knew being a Nassau resident gives you points for NCC, though.

I don't know if it's much help, but please don't let this defeat you. I've applied to SCCC a couple of times in the past and have been rejected. For this reason, I ended up doing the LPN 2-year program at Boces and have applied for the LPN-RN program at SCCC. Boces has a 1 year program. It's intense, but I have a couple of friends who have done it and survived. Also, a good support system will be helpful. You also might have to retake the TEAS test at Boces before they interview you, but I think the problem is that the program starts in September only. SCCC also has an LPN program if that is better for you.

If you do go for LPN, people may tell you you are wasting time. Don't listen to them. Sure you won't be able to work in any hospital on Long Island, but you'll get experience as a nurse working in clinics, nursing homes, etc. while building a rapport with your coworkers. And having those connections can be important especially since Long Island is small. There seems to be 2 or 3 degrees of every nurse here.

I started a job in dialysis. I did not expect to get it, and I've been lucky. Every day is a different kind of intense as everything is still new with me being fresh out of school. But I most likely wouldn't be here if I decided not to go to Boces. I don't know if I will continue to work here for the rest of my career as a nurse, but it has definitely opened doors for me.

You need to go at your own pace. If you need to take 1 or 2 years to improve your TEAS score/get an A in one of the classes to improve your rubric score/go for LPN/whatever, then take it, but don't lose sight of your goal! Next year, you can even apply to both programs if you wish to. Not everyone knows or understands the circumstances you're in, so don't let others' opinions discourage you. Remember, the beauty about nursing is that there isn't just one way to become a nurse.

got my denial too. scored 74+ on my first try for fall 2017 application and 76+ on my spring 2018 application. if you got 80+ in TEAS and finished all the prerequisite they should have accepted you. I don't think your residence matters. now I really don't know what's the bulk of their decision. is it the teas or what? I was also informed before I applied for Spring 2018 to just enroll in AP1 and work to have a high grade. because I asked if I should take TEAS again and she said that will be taking 3 times already. should I have known that this will be the result I think I should have taken TEAS again and aimed for 90 and above. I dunno what to do anymore.

@chrstec ... I just got my denial letter today as well. I agree with you on them looking at other components. I got an 80 (Advanced) on the TEAs, just as you, and have all of the prereqs except the Biomedical Ethics on the rubric (only worth .25 points). I saw a couple people got in with good grades, but just 'Proficient' on the TEAs, so I'm starting to think the 'rubric' is not as important as they say.

Hello all,

i was accepted and will be starting this spring.

i scored an 83 on the TEAS and have A's in AP1 & 2, english 101 , psychology 101 , & a B+ in statistics

I went to an information seminar and would like to clarify. For SCCC they just use the rubric score. They take the top scores and just go down the list until they run out of spots. If you're not a suffolk resident, you dont even get considered for admission until all the suffolk applicants have been considered even those with low rubric scores. Nassau residents basically are at the end of the list.

I went to an info session and that was never once mentioned. This whole thing is even more frustrating considering I'm moving to Suffolk in less than two months! Looks like I'm applying for the fall...

I'm confused about this because someone earlier posted she got an 80 on the TEAS and had all. It the biomedical ethics prerequisites completed and didn't get in but saw others with lower TRAS scores get accepted. She got the additional points added to her rubric for scoring "advanced" on the TEAS. It seems that although they say it is only the rubric, it isnt based on the info she gave.

Looks like the two that got denied with 80s were both in Nassau county. That must be why.

Yep, that's it exactly. I wish they would've been more transparent about residency so I wouldn't have had to waste my time applying.

Thank you everyone for your words of encouragement. I will be meeting with a admissions counselor this week to get their input, and see if it's even worth reapplying for the Fall. @chrstec ... you definitely should have gotten in with your TEAs score and grades. It's just unfortunate that residence is a key factor as well, and we live in Nassau County. Again, Congrats to those who got in, and good luck on your future endeavors. For those of us who didn't, don't give up, keep pushing if this is your dream.

Dceon ... Did you take A&P II? If not, I would recommend doing so before taking the TEAs again. This way you will increase your chance of getting 'Advanced' or above. Also, work on completing as many prerequisites as possible with good grades. Though the TEAs make up 75% of the points on the rubric, as long as you get the points for "Academic Preparedness", the prereqs could really put you in a good standing as well.

I just applied for fall at NCC actually! I'm moving to Suffolk soon though so hopefully I'll either get accepted at Nassau before that happens or I just wait and reapply at Suffolk once I'm a resident.

Also, just to be cheeky... I framed my denial letter from Suffolk Community College and hung it between my two Master's degree diplomas in my office ;)
