successfully doing sciences over the summer

Published

Hey ladies and gents! I'm debating whether or not it's a good idea for me to take anatomy this summer. I know there's a lot to memorize and I really want to learn the subject as thoroughly as possible and that is making me question whether it's wise to take a major science over the summer. Chem would've been easier over the summer because it's mainly problem solving (I'm in it now)but anatomy is "harder" because of the sheer amount of material to memorize. Can anyone who's taken it over the summer give me any words of wisdom?

I should also add it's a 6 week course.

First, I should day that I did not take anatomy over the Summer, but I will say that a 6 week course and your desire to "learn it thoroughly" is a contradiction in terms. In 6 weeks, some content has to be left out, and while you may learn what is taught thoroughly, I'd bet that much of what is learned will be soon forgotten. This and physio arerealky the foundations of nursing, and I feel that they deserve a full course content and full attention. This is not even mentioning that the 6 weeks willbe brutal, as Anatomy is a tidal wave of information. Just my 2 cents.

Thank you. This is what I figured would be the case. A friend of mine in a reputable program has been urging me to take my sciences over summer to apply sooner but I know it'll backfire later once I'm in the program and my knowledge of anatomy is spotty. Thanks again!! ☺️

Hey! Before I start I want to say that I did not take anatomy over the summer, but I did take microbiology during the summer in a 6 week course and it was brutal. If you want to thoroughly learn the information, I suggest NOT taking it during the summer. I found myself just memorizing the information, rather than understanding it, simply because I just did not have enough time to comprehend all the material. The amount of information they want you to learn in such a short period of time is very overwhelming. Not to mention that both anatomy and micro have lab components to them, which is like taking 2 classes at a time. I just want to add that anatomy is VERY important once you start nursing. You are going to be referring back to that subject multiple times during the semester and you have to have a solid foundation in order to be successful.

Thank you simplistic! I always enjoy reading your comments. Yeah, I think I'm gonna take the long route with my remaining science classes and consider it an invaluable investment.

I took anatomy over the summer and it was an 8-week course. I took it because for my school I had to take Anatomy, Physiology, and Microbiology in order. I planned to apply in spring 2017 and now I'm working on micro. I got lucky and got an easy anatomy teacher. He offered a lot of extra credit and I ended up passing with a 98%. My class was 4 days a week and 6 hours in class. It basically took up a good chunk of my summer. We would go through a chapter per day. Every day I would have to read the material before class and study the material right after class. I would suggest taking chem during the summer. Also, check Ratemyproffessor to see if your anatomy or chem teacher are good professors. That's my primary source and motive to pick a class or not.

I didn't take a and p over the summer, though I've done others. The good thing about summer courses is they have to cut out some material and don't waste time on things that aren't as important, making, imo the workload more manageable (though still brutal). A solid foundation in a and p will help, no doubt, but things can be looked up. I say consider it.

I've just finished my science prereqs last semester. Since nursing is going to be my 2nd degree, I've done my sciences pretty quickly. I took Anatomy in an 8-week summer course and Microbiology in a 6-week winter course. Both were very fast paced and doing 1 or 2 chapters per day with multiple quizzes and a test per week. I have no kids or a job so I was able to commit my entire attention on the material. I ended up getting high As in both, however, there were only about 2-4 As in both classes. A majority of the students got Bs and Cs. I recommend taking the accelerated route if you think you can handle it.

Anatomy is a core nursing course and not to be taken lightly. You definitely need an A and do this in 6 weeks is setting up for a loss in the long run. Only course I could suggest is Nutrition for summer, leave all core science courses for 16 week programs to get full understanding on topics, not to mention the needed A's to actually get to nursing school.

I did nutrition and psych online last summer and finished both with As. But yes you're right nutrition is doable.

A&P is something that will be used almost every day in a nursing career. It is not a class I would suggest taking on a crash course of 6 weeks. That's very intense!
