Students not working while going to school....

Published

So I have decided not to work while I go through the BSN program. I would like to hear from others who have or are doing the same thing. How are you getting through financially? Loans, parents, or other? I am a non-trad student that will most likely be taking out a few loans here and there to get me through, but I feel this is necessary to keep up with my course work. How about you?

I am glad that many nursing student can still work and go to nursing school.

I had always been a full time student and work full time, but when I got accepted into nursing I quit my job, however, I did pick up more classes. So I will be doing nursing at a community college and also be full time at CSUF. I had to quit my job because I am double majoring and there is no way in hell I was gonna quit my second major cause I am almost done and then I can reviced my BA in criminology. I am hoping to become a forensic nurse so i will need my criminology classes.

However, I do feel like I am neglecting my 10 yr old daugther and my husband because of my education. But I have a supportive husband and daugther so I guess things will play out fine. I got to admitt that when I quit my job and had to depend on my husband, i almost went carzy because I had to cut back on alot of spending. Plus knowing that my husband made less then me makes it all worst. I still dont know how it is goning to play itself out because nursing school has not start for me, so we'll see when it actually starts.

I've been a stay at home mom and live off my husband, lol. I can't imagine working AND going to school! It's hard enough with kids and doing school work.... just want to wish you luck!

:yeahthat:

I actually got a blessing in disguise. I was laid off in april, I had worked for the company for eight years and this was the first time they have ever had to do layoffs. They got rid of half of their employees and I was one of them. I decided I would just take the summer off because I have always had a job since I was 16. I am going to take out loans if I need them and my boyfriend makes enough money to pay the bills. I was furious when I first lost my job but I got a well deserved break before two years of hard work. By not working I think I will learn the material better than if I had to worry about a job too.

i plan on working while in the program. i start in a few days. however, i'm only working 16 hours per week. I have to work at least 16 hours a week for my job to pay for my tuition and books (they prepay and no job commitment after, so thats a big bonus :))

if, for some reason, i can't manage working or feeling overwhelmed, well then i'll have to quit and live off my husband. we do not have any kids.

add me to the list who is living off of their husbands!

I quit my job to do my accelerated program. It was the best decision...I am almost at the halfway point and I cant imagine doing this and working. Its too intense and time consuming...for me at least.

I've also have loans to help pay, which is nice.

I'm living off my girlfriend. She pays the bills and I goto school. I pay my bills with personal loans. She pays rent and utilities. Never had a g/f before who didnt expect me to pay for everything. Kinda neat!

I am lucky that I have been a SAHM for the past 4.5 years and we survive off of DH's income. I did take out a loan for books and to pay my mother who will be picking up my youngest from his 1/2 day Pre-K class for the first year of nursing school. I can't imagine working, nursing school, 3 kids and a household to run. I think those who can do all that are amazing. The thought for myself doing that is so scary.

We made it through the first semester with my husband's income and a student loan. At Christmas time, the oilfield collapsed and he works for Halliburton. Thankfully, I had $10,000 in my teacher retirement account, which I withdrew and we supplemented his pay with it. It was a hard choice to make, but in the end, it was what was best for my family.

I just graduated August 7th and I don't regret any decisions we had to make. I start my new job September 1st and I'm happy that we made it this far. Also, my husbands job has done very well over the summer and we have been blessed to make it!!!:D

I depended on hubby for 13 months while I went to school. No regrets whatsoever.

I'm not working for the two years I'll be in nursing school. I was laid off in January 2009, which is when I decided to attend school instead of looking for another job in my old (unfulfilling and unstable) field of Human Resources Recruiting. I don't qualify for any financial aid because I already have a BA in an unrelated field. I got lucky - I had a decent amount of savings and no debts, and my husband earns well. We don't have any kids and we are renters, so no mortgage to worry about.

I am in a position where I have to work. At least 20 hours - so there are people in situations far more difficult and challenging then myself- but I do find it to be difficult, sacrificing, and tough to do both but nontheless.. It CAN be done. Where there is a will there is a way. Kudos to ALL nursing students - working and non-working :)

I'm in my last year of nursing and I would have never made it this far if I worked. A lot of my classmates do work part-time though. School is so hard and with 2 children, 2 dogs and a husband I just couldn't do it while working. I do really have to watch my pennies and hopefully it will all work out.
