Students asking for free money

Nursing Students General Students

Upon browsing different nursing groups including this one, I have noticed a new trend...current or nursing students to be asking for money via goFundme. Why don't they apply for scholarships or for student loans the way most, if not all of us, did?

I really think its a self entitlement attitude they have, and no, I am not an old fuddy duddy. I worked part to full time to put food on the table whilst putting myself through nursing school with the help of my money, grants, loans and scholarships as I raised my kids. I am 40 years old now, and I EARNED what I have due to my hard work and yes, I did have hardships just like everyone else. But having put myself through school without asking anyone for free money such as goFundme has made me appreciate everything I have even more.

Yes, Scholarships are a form of free money but that required writing essays, gathering documents, putting packets together, rushing them to the post office before the deadlines, only to get turned down multiple times, but so what? Eventually one says yes, and the efforts pay off. But now people don't want to do any work for it and would rather put their face on the web to ask for a free ride?

I find this very annoying and a slap on the face for those of us that struggled, AND made it. I know I am being harsh and it sounds terrible, but I hope these people that ask strangers to fund their education simply by asking for free money fail school because they do not deserve to be nurses. I know many people that had deaths in the family or other crisis happen in their lives and they got through school by working or loans instead of playing victim and mooching off others. This is my opinion.

Umm...Why do ya'll care? If there are people who are able and willing to donate money to strangers, education is not a bad reason. I would say before judging so harshly, realize that you never know someone's situation and how hard they actually have been working. Sounds like maybe you all are bitter because there was no GoFundme around when you were in school?...

I'm not bitter. My parents had no money to send me to school but they supported me throughout including providing me with a geek mobile and and car/health insurance. They didn't plan it but they lived 20 min from Fresno State so all I had to get a loan for was books and tuition, which I took out while there was a market for nurses.

It's a shame parents don't have a plan for their kids' education after HS, some kind of plan to give them a start.

Gofundme me has a reputation for shallow requests but if someone without resources can get assist for an education then I don't resent that at all.

I really dislike crowdfunding, too. I've straight out told people I know not to include me in requests, because I'm tired of getting asked to give people my money that I worked for so that they don't have to. It's almost always for things like trips to nice places (maybe I'd like to spend MY money for ME to go on a trip?), or to make an album, or to make a movie, or to pay for a wedding.

My feeling is if you want something, you work for it instead of asking everyone else to pay so that you don't have to. It puts a strain on friendships.

For me it's the same, except I'm a sucker for a GoFundMe that a local dog rescue does every once in a while when they get really expensive vet bills or really tough rehab cases that deplete their funds. I have a humongous gaping soft spot for dogs, I can't help it. I just go without my coffee one day every once in a while. It doesn't hurt that on many occasions it counts as a tax deduction.

Didn't we just have this thread? Like 2 months ago? The OP sounds almost verbatim. It became quite heated.

Yeah, threads have a way of popping up again after they've been closed due to fighting. My personal favorites though are the ones asking why the previous ones on the same subject were closed. Or starting another thread about the same subject and someone has to just post as to why the other thread was closed so they can scold the people who got it closed.

I don't donate to those things. I did once-the young girl had a mito disease and was trying to raise money to go to the UK for some experimental treatment. She passed away a couple of weeks after raising about $30,000. Did her husband, who was also on the account refund the money? No. He used it to buy himself a shiny new mustang. And a new girlfriend.

Well, now, I'm a sucker for animal rescue organizations. And like you said, I don't mind not buying that extra whatever if it means a sick animal can get care.

There's a special place in hell for that guy. The right thing to do would have been to start a memorial fund for someone else who was sick. I just don't get people.

Wow. He didn't even use it for funeral costs? Horrible!!

Agree with some of the PPs- it's really hard for a lot of kids to get scholarships these days for college, or even to know about the financial aid office in the first place. I must have counseled at least a few dozen of my peers in nursing school about filling out the FAFSA and applying for scholarships.

Seriously? How is it someone can get accepted to college without knowing about the financial aid office? That has to be a strange form of willful ignorance. They're listed on school websites and easily located. Schools want to make money and financial aid gets them more sources of revenue.

I guess he felt he was "entitled" to it because he is a disable veteran. She was raising money for her treatment yet he also had to put on the site how he was a disabled veteran and how little he would be getting. He moved back to the state were they came from about a month after she passed and within a months time he was showing off his new car and girlfriend on his FB page. He's never mentioned his wife in the year that she died-not even on the anniversary of her death. Her Daddy did though-he's the one that seems really broken up by her death. He has all this stuff about Mito disease on his FB page while her husband has nothing at all about her disease.

She was cremated and there was no services so I doubt it cost a lot for funeral expenses. When my Mom died it was about $700 for the cremation and fancy urn.

I say why not.

If i was younger(i am 32) i would find a sugar daddy to fund my Bsn Degree.

I guess i could find one now,but then he would have to be older than 75

Off i go to Sugardaddy.com

I did have a sugar daddy partially fund my lpn schooling, and i was 20 at that time

I have no regrets.

This was about asking for money on the internet, not trading sex for money.
