Student nursing jobs

Nursing Students General Students

Published

Iam a nursing student and I was told that hospitals will hire student nurses to work as a unit secertary. Does anyone know if this true? I work at a restaurant now and would love to get a job related to the medical field. Any input or advise would be apperciated. Thanks.:)

I currently work at a student nurse tech. I did work at one hospital previously that had an official externship program. I hated it. I have since learned that some hospitals in my area use externship programs to "weed out" students that they would not want to hire on graduation. It sounds like an OK deal, unless you are one of the 90% that are not offered a job on graduation.

I have since left that hospital and now work at a smaller hospital that does not have an externship program, so I am technically a nurse tech. However since I am one of only two student nurses employed in my department, the nurses are really excited to work with us and teach us new stuff. And I was recently told by my employer that they would love to keep me on graduation (in just a few weeks!!)

So if you look into an externship program, find out up front if they generally keep their techs on staff as RN's on graduation. (Don't get me wrong, some hospitals keep 100% of their techs.) I wish I had known this before, it would have saved me a lot of time and energy!

Good luck to you!

I didnt even think about that. Thanks for the advise. I will make sure I ask that when I get to that point. I'm only in my 2nd semester.

What about nursing homes? I worked as an aid for about 4 years at a couple of different nursing homes. I felt like they did'nt treat their staff very well. I dont know if it was because I was an aid or if that is how nursing homes work. Because of that experience I'm leaning more toward working in a hospital.

I work as a Nurse Partner in the PICU. The farther along you get in nursing school the more opportunities you will get as a student in the hospital. I get to do a LOT as a nurse partner (blood draws, Foley, cath suctioning, IV sticks but no meds or PO meds, assessment and charting, sterile dressing changes, and then the general CNA type duties like VS, baths, Accuchecks, etc). WONDERFUL experience! I work at a teaching university hospital.

I wouldn't work in a nursing home but that is just me :) I have a friend who is a LPN in our BSN program and she LOVES working with the elderly population and is fantastic, you need to do what you love!

I agree with the poster who mentioned about the nurse extern programs, some are pretty crappy (your just basically a CNA which isn't going to teach you the RN skills you need). I personally hated working as a CNA and wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

And yes, we have people like monitor techs (good experience), unit secretaries, etc who have no previous experience.

Since I just finished up my first semester my school offers an internship program. We work at the hospital 3 days a week, but we are not counted as staff even though we are hired through the hospital(and get paid through them). So we can go and observe on other floors and do procedures with our clinical instructor supervising. I am looking forward to it.

If you need a job while in nursing school, patient sitter is excellent. You can get great experience, see what RNs handle on an hour-to-hour basis, and it's really easy..you provide constant, one-on-one supervision for a patient who's a suicide risk, fall risk, or generally confused..and if your assigned patient is sleeping, you get time to study, so it's perfect!

I am from South Jersey and have an interview Tuesday for a Unit Secretary job. I have two clinical semesters under my belt, but having trouble getting a CNA job in the local hospitals. In long term care in NJ you have to be certified. I am learning each hospital has different requirments for their CNA's.

This sounds great. Where would I look for a job like this?

Just go on a hospital's website and search their open jobs for "sitter" or "patient sitter", or you can call their human resources department and ask if they have someting like that available :loveya:

I just finished my first year, and my first clinical and I got a job at a hospital in the ICU&SDU as a care partner. I start monday, but i am hopeing that I will learn a ton. Our HCP had a ton of jobs on their website for nursing students. I would go on their website or call HR like someone else said and just find out what's available. Good Luck!!
