How hard is it to get a job as a nurse practitioner in san francisco?

FOR ACUTE CARE ADULT NP, I wanted to see if any of the community has experience applying to this part of the US. I am not familiar, and just want to see other's opinions. Also how early for CA do you apply for licensure/what are the steps? I am still in school so want to get organized.

I'm not an NP and don't live in San Fransisco. I can only tell you that California is saturated with nurses, in general ...and it seems like they are ALL in school to become NPs, especially the newer RN graduates. So good luck. You might need it.

I applied throughout northern/southern/central California for roughly 6+ months for adult gerontology acute care NP. Never even got a phone call.

Sorry to hear that ArmaniX. I work as an ACNP in San Francisco. I was hired in 2009 from out of state with 5 years of ICU NP experience and over 10 years of RN experience. San Francisco has ACNP openings right now but the pool of candidates is large. Our group has been on a hiring spree actually as we are expanding but unfortunately for other candidates, the new hires were experienced ICU NP's from out of state, ICU NP's from within California, and new grads from both our own AGACNP and ICU NP fellowship program. I feel like there are jobs in other departments that are not getting filled but I have no insight on how picky the hiring managers are.

It all worked out in the end, just wasnt meant to be at the time. I ended up in Baltimore's shock trauma center and couldn't be happier with the group.

I'm from the west not California but have been a nurse in Manhattan and CT. I know nyc is an animal of it's own, so I'm just wondering if it will be harder to find job in SF than NYC?

I say get NP experience in NYC for a few years and then try applying...by then, I'm sure you will get multiple job offers. I know plenty of NP colleagues who started their career in NYC. It will be a culture shock for you though (East Coast vs West Coast).

out of state from New England area, I love the Bay Area. I lived in NYC for a while and want to try an urban city that is cleaner and has more advocacy for nurses.

In comparison to NYC is it harder to find a job in SF? I'm just wondering more about the hospital systems there and the supply and demand. NYC has quite a few NP students, and few residencies.
