student loans

Published

My packet went to the board for this month and was accepted. I am going to commision on Tuesday. Does my total of my student loans that is going to be paid back need to be written in my contract? The recruiter is telling me that information will need to be given to the unit that I am being assigned. Just want to have all the facts before Tuesday. Thanks

Hi

I'm not Cindy but, I put in to get the bonus first and the loan repayment 2nd. In post thought, I was thinking that maybe I should have checked to see if I could've staggered them (i.e. one one year, the other the next etc ). Oh well, same thing comes out in the end.

I chose to take my student loan incentive first that way I get that burden out of the way first, although having the bonus up front would be nice too. Just it just depends on what you want to do.

One thing that I have defintaley learned through this whole process is that you always need to check and recheck that all appropriate paperwork have been submitted. I am lucky that my recruiter seems to have his ducks in a row but he does not always have all his information inline. Hmmmmm sounds a bit like nursing doesn't it!? :nurse:

I am wondering if anybody has had any difficulties putting their student loan payments on hold? I was looking through my lender's guidelines and there are many breaks for active duty but not the reserves. I have yet to call and talk with someone directly, if I get my butt in gear thats something I can do early this week.

Years ago, when I had to defer my student loans for reasons not for the military (my daughter was fighting cancer and I couldn't work and I was married to an alcoholic and that chewed up whatever money I could use to pay on the loans) I had no problem deferring. The other day I was poking around on the Sallie Mae website, looking for the form I needed for the recruiter (the loan verfication forn that the lender needs to complete) and I saw quite a few forms for deferrment for those serving in the military. I did not find the form I needed however and ended up calling them because (how conveniently) the first one which was faxed to them (and they said yes indeedy that it was faxed to the correct number and I had a ok verification from my end) supposedly never got received. Oh and fyi everyone, Make sure you put down a snail mail address for where you want your lender to mail it (if they won't fax so you may want to double check whether they will or not) to because they may not fax it back (as in sallie mae's case) and that it may take up to 2 weeks to get it back (also sallie mae's case). Hope this helps---edie

Edie,

Do you mean do all the applications go to the same board? It is not a stupid question at all.

The way that my recruiter explained it to me was that a bunch of senior officers MAJ and higher went through the applications. They make the decision whether or not to accept the application based upon many different areas. I am not sure if there are multiple boards based on geographic location or just one actual board.

to get commissioned?

Yes, it is part of the process. You have to complete your application, medical exam, submit all required documents. During this process you are given your RN identifer

"66H" as well as any other identifiers based on your specialty. Before your application goes to board you are assigned to a unit. Application is sent to board for approval/denial. If you are approved you will have a direct commission, if you are denied then you fix the areas that hurt you and resubmit if you can.

to get commissioned?

Sorry, I thought you were talking about physically having to go in front of the board. If I understood the recruiter there is only one board, that takes all the appiclations.

Cindy,

Did you do both student loans and sign on bonus? I did, and I am taking the sign on bonus first. I was thinking about putting my student loans in deferment. Not quite sure yet what to do.

Thanks,

Cathy

Hi Cathy,

Sorry for the late post.....the topic has changed a bit.....

Yes, when I commission in the ARNC, I did both:

Sign-on bonus 30K

Loan repayment 50K

In that order....I don't think you can alternate back and forth. My loans are in

"in school-status...deferment"--- enrolled in graduate school. Not sure if you can "defer" loans without school or active duty....Each loan has different criteria.

Obviously, unsubsidized loans still accrue....but we all know that.....

You can also request "forbearance" in times of hardship....

good luck

cindy
