We just had a horrible incident today, left me and some of the faculty in tears. One of our students decided to balance their stomach on the side of the stairs and fell from 15 feet to the first floor. EMT came on the scene and took her to the hospital, and one of our admin went with her. She said it was horrible, the child kept coming in and out of consciousness and was fighting off staff, not even remembering her mother, seems like she's not doing so well. We saw the security footage and you can see her falling, it was horrific.
We are praying for a safe recovery for her and her family.
I'm happy too, I was so worried how she was and so mad at myself that I couldn't help much, except wait for EMT to come out and get her.
You can't be mad at yourself! You don't have an ER orificenal at your disposal in the school! There is nothing you could have done in this situation except keep the student safe.
If there is bleeding, we can apply pressure but we can't transfuse.
If there is a displaced fracture, we can keep the student immobile but we can't set the bone.
There are limits to our practice and our means. That is one of the reasons that this specialty is so different than any other nursing specialty.
