Stressing over GRE scores

Published

Okay. Here's the deal. I just finished my RN-BSN program in December 2007 with a GPA of 3.88. Concurrently I began my application process to graduate school with University of Akron, University of Cincinnati and Case Western Reserve. Recently University of Cincinnati advised me that with my GRE scores I would not be granted an interview. My qualitative and quantitative scores equate to 800 and my analytical score was 3.5. University of Akron granted admissions to the graduate program of nursing, still will have to interview for the Nurse Anesthesia program and there is no response from Case yet.

Should I retake the GRE's? I've even considered taking a course just to get my scores up.

I guess I am disappointed.

I used the Princeton Review CD and book, the Kaplan book and the CD from the GRE. I really could not say what works best. If I had to take it again I would have focused more on the math because that is something you can study for.

I'm stressing over this too. I took my GRE today and got a verbal of 470 and quantitative of 610, but my program requires 500 on both. My GPA is a 3.6. So my combined GRE score (1080) and GPA are both higher than the average of students admitted in previous years GPA (3.29) and GRE (999). I'll have excellent references and I feel confident about my analytical score.

I'm wondering if they'll let me slide in or admit me on the condition I retake it and improve my scores. It's just really discouraging because my practice tests varied from 450-700. I feel like if I had been lucky and been given a different test, I'd have done better.

The fact that the posted average is less than the 500/500 minimum means that someone had to be let in with a less than 1000, or the posted average would have to be above 1000. Just a thought, I agree with the other posters that you will want to call the school before sitting through that rediculous test again.

Armynse, I just received a call for my interview - I guess they're not really strict on the 500/500 policy (it is listed on the website as a requirement). Also I know one other person with a total of

To all potential applicants:

GRE scores are nothing more than a formality. It is in no way an accurate predicator of past or future academic success. I was granted acceptance into both of the CRNA schools that I applied to w/ less than 1 yr ICU exp. My GRE was very low, but still got accepted; imagine that.....

new scale coming....... http://www.ets.org/Media/Newsletters/GRE/2006/0601_scale.html

.....but by the looks of your score and the previous scale...you only need about 10 more questions correct to get to about a 930 and 15 more to get above a grand. I am sure there are very easy things to correct in your previous test, like trig and geometry or learning a new word per day.

I get a new word per day from merriam-webster. easy to do and you can always save the words in a new folder. Seriously, how many times a day do you check your e-mail.....come on, tell the truth now.....

what schools did you apply to?

Just a little advice. I tend to get a little nervous before huge standardized tests. When it comes to tests within my realm of study...I'm fine. But give me the ACT, SAT, GRE.......I will NOT impress you. This being said...I went in with the idea that I would be taking the GRE twice. I studied only a tiny bit for the first time I took it because I was really just going to get a feel for everything and frankly I didn't want to spend all that money on a kaplan course. I got a 950 the first time with a 5 in the analytical portion. I waited 2 months...studied some flash cards and a review book and went in for another GRE test with much calmer nerves and scored a 1200 with a 5.5 analytical. Obviously, this won't work for everyone....but if your issue really is nerves...Id recommend this tactic.
