  1. I recently gained admission to CRNA school and will start classes in August. What material should I familiarize myself with in the meantime? What would you (CRNA graduates) get a head start on if you had it to do over again? Thanks in advance.
  2. Hey guys, I just wanted to follow up since there is so little information regarding a situation like this on the internet. I consulted my lawyer regarding the disclosure to my current employer and she said that she could not advise me on that decision. I decided not to disclose immediately and just ride it out until I was admitted to CRNA school in a few months... However, while doing some research for one of my pre-requisite classes on the BON website I decided to check the status of my license. It had not been updated at the time, but at the top of the page was a notice regarding a new policy. As of November 2011 the BON will be updating all current employers of any changes to license status REALTIME! I still had a few days until the new policy went into effect, so I immediately informed my manager. It had only been a few days since the decision was made by the board, and my license still showed no reprimand.. She was very pleased that I told her before she found out on her own. She told me that it would not likely affect my current job because it happened after I was hired. (I worked at two hospitals for a short while). She got back to me a few days later and informed me that my job was secure and she felt like I had gone through enough. That was the biggest sigh of relief I have ever breathed!!! If you receive a reprimand, I highly recommend you tell your current employers immediately to avoid the appearance of deceit. This really only applies to someone working at two hospitals because it would already be known to the hospital in which the incident occurs. This is also a VERY good reason to have multiple employers, because if i hadn't had a second job, it would be next to impossible to get hired with a reprimand on my license.
  3. I agree that you should focus on finishing your BSN first. I recommend obtaining a position as a PCT in an ICU just to get your feet wet. I have an interview in less than a month and I have worked in a cardiac ICU for 6 years. You should also realize that ICU settings offer many opportunities for mistakes once you become a nurse. I recommend that you buy the book required for the Law and Policy class required by your local CRNA program. It will help you avoid common mistakes, like taking incomplete orders, and will familiarize you with the Board of Nursing. The liability only increases when you become a CRNA. Spend your free time familiarizing yourself with the drugs and equipment used in anesthesia.
  4. @caliotter3 - As I understand it there annual checks on the status of licenses in most hospitals. @xtxrn - Yes, this is a public reprimand. On the BON website, where the status of my license is displayed, there will be a description of the events that took place, a list of violations according to the nursing practice act, and details of my reprimand (more specifically the names of the classes I am required to take). By the way, I suggest everyone obtain a copy of the Nursing Practice Act and read it thoroughly.
  5. The events took place at a different hospital. I was let go as a preventative measure before it went to the board. The hospital held several meetings and decided it was not serious enough to report to the BON, but the issue was reported a few days later by an anonymous caller. I have searched the internet high and low and can find nothing regarding actions taken by employers in respect to public reprimands.
  6. Hi everyone, I have recently dealt with the board of nursing over an issue with how an order was given (and how I interpereted it) and a charting violation. I recieved a public reprand which consists of taking classes and having the reprimand displayed publicly on the BON website. I am curious how this will affect my current employment as I will be telling my supervisor before it is found out by human resources. Has anyone else dealt with a public reprimand? How long did it affect your career? Thanks in advance
  7. what schools did you apply to?
  8. I agree that the MICU can be depressing, but can't all ICU's be that way? I plan to transfer to a CVICU when I move in a few months. I am ready to take care of different types of patients and have even more experience with IABPs.
  9. Do you work in a large hospital or a rural hospital? Is there much difference between what is expected of a CRNA in a larger hospital versus a smaller one?
  10. I am moving to North Carolina in a few months and plan to attend CRNA school there. Has anyone applied for loans for CRNA school that was applying out of state? Is it still relatively easy to get loans? Does it make it harder to get accepted if you are not considered a resident yet? Thanks in advance for your reply.
  11. I have been working in MI/SI for a little over a year. I work night shift and am lucky to work with a close group on nights that help each other. We dont get many new nurses because no one from nights wants to go to day shift. The day shift on my unit are similar to how you describe your unit. I dont agree with the way some nurses treat new grads, but hang in there. It may benefit you to try a new area. As someone said earlier, not every ICU is that bad to new grads.
  12. If you go to the WCU website it will tell you all you are asking. They are an accredited CRNA school though!!
  13. IF you go to the WCU website CRNA school portion, it will explain all you need to know. It has not had a CRNA school for long, but it is accredited!
  14. If you go to the West Carolina University website CRNA program, you can find the answers you are looking for. It is a new program but is accredited!
  15. Has anyone applied to West Carolina? So far I have been unable to find anyone who has applied or gotten in there? If you know anything please let me know. Thanks.
