Need help with the alveolar air equation
Ok guys, I need some help with the alveolar air equation: I know it goes something like PAO2 = PIO2 - (PACO2/R) + F. Scenario is: pt breathing room air @ sea level, PaO2 = 100, PaCO2 = 40. If you double the alveolar ventialtion for 10 minutes, what is the new PO2 & PCO2 assuming R=0.8? Answer is PO2 = 125 & PCO2 = 20 Rationale is: - increase alveolar ventilation --> increase PA02 - double alveolar ventilation --> no double in PAO2 in person whose PA)2 is already 104 b/c highest PAO2 one could possibly achieve at sea level First of all, I can't see how the above #'s go into this equation. Second, I though that if you double ventilation, you can double O2 up to 150... But I may have it all wrong, everything's starting to look blurry to me. Thanks in advance if anyone could enlighten me!!! - Becky

Re: Prospective LSU SCRNA Students
Oops.. I posted to the other thread before I read this one. Thanks for the info. It seems I've heard about having to pay twice for it. hmmm... it still would be nice to knock it out of the way. But is the summer class not as detailed as if you were taking it in the fall? Does that mean if we take it in the summer we might miss some important material?

Any new SRNAs at LSU New Orleans?
I was told we should call Dr. Kay Lopez a couple weeks before the registration date (may something) to sign up for the summer class. About the UNO course - it is very easy, I've heard, but it would be hard for me to commit 2 days a week for the stats class, as well as one day a week for the summer NA class - and try to work a full time schedule (nights).

When people say they are nurses but not...

Any new SRNAs at LSU New Orleans?
I'm going to take the summer class. I wish they were offering 2 but... oh well. I'm also taking the stats at Univ of Phoenix. But I haven't started - still trying to decide if I'm going online or to the Metairie campus.

When people say they are nurses but not...
Doesn't bother me unless the girl/ family is saying she is a registered nurse or a licensed nurse. In my state surgical technicians are called scrub nurses. They don't have degrees or diplomas, just certificates - some of them... Look at the history of nursing - I mean way back: nurses were any person who cared for the sick, before there were nursing schools, nclex, boards of nursing, etc. I'd be interested to know what the Webster definition of "nurse" is. Anyone have one handy?

Letters of Recommendation Ideas and Concerns
I got one from my nursing school dean, one from the crna I shadowed, and one from my nsg school critical care instructor (who also held clinicals in my unit and occasionally taught classes at the hospital). No nurse manager or charge nurse (I had less than a year on my unit). Worked for me...

Using same syringes all day
Hi, I'm an ICU RN, and a NA school applicant (should find out any day now). I want to ask about a pretty common practice I've seen in my unit. A nurse will draw up a medication and mix it in a 10cc NS syringe, label it, and place the unused portion in the patient's bedside drawer to be used on the same patient later. It is usually a PRN morphine or ativan. I guess the rationale for this is that often these patients are in severe pain/ distress and may have these meds ordered Q 1-2 hrs. The Pyxis is quite a long walk from some of the rooms on our unit. What do you think about that?

I'm in... with one year experience
one crna, I certainly respect your position and your input, but can you tell me what you think are the reasons the AANA and the individuals schools are willing to accept/ interview nurses with 1 yr/ less than 1 yr at interview if it did not produce safe, effective, and prudent CRNAs? Years ago, students entering anesthesia school did not even have to have any knowledge of vents, drips, etc - they could enter anesthesia school without any critical care experience. I know this because I've talked to some of the experienced CRNAs (>30 yrs practice). Why was it safe/ effective for them to do it, but not now? Not putting down your opinion, but truly want to understand why the governing/ accreditation organization and many schools would allow this if it weren't safe & effective?

Professional dress
Thanks, I actually had my interview yesterday. I went out and bought a suit yesterday morning (my interview was in the afternoon) because I did not have one. There were two ladies holding my interview: one was wearing a skirt suit and the other was dressed business casual. But I saw two other nurses interviewing and they were both wearing suits, so I'm glad I did too (as much as I hated it and thought I looked awful - my family thought otherwise). Now, with the interview over, the wait has begun!!

Professional dress
What do you think? Is a suit necessary, or is a pair of dress pants with a nice top sufficient for a CRNA interview? Any ideas/ thoughts?

Meeting with Director
A couple questions I plan on asking pertain to new graduates finding competitive jobs and rumors I've heard of CRNA programs becoming doctorate programs.

LSU interviewing process
Rob, how do you think your interview went? Was it what you expected? Good luck!!!
