  1. Morgiesmom, I too will start at UAB this fall. Congrats! Like you, I am very nervous about making the move from one position that you know to embarking on the unknown. But we'll get through it just like others before us have and others behind us will. I try to give myself these little pep talks....not sure if it's working because I am still pretty terrified about the whole thing!:chair:
  2. I also will be going to UAB this fall. I will be doing my clinicals in Birmingham. Do you live in the Birmingham area or will you need to find a place to live. I look forward to meeting you then.
  3. We've had several threads from everyone saying they were accepted to various schools, but if everyone is willing let's do one big thread for everyone that will be starting anesthesia school this summer or fall. If you don't mind please include where you applied, the status from each school ( meaning didn't get an interview, interviewed and not accepted/made alternate/accepted), and the school you chose and why. Thanks, so much! I applied to : 1) Medical College of Georgia- interviewed and made alternate 2) Samford (in Birmingham)- interviewed and accepted 3) University of Alabama at Birmingham- interviewed and accepted and will be going there this fall. I chose UAB because I loved the Director and all of their clinicals are in Birmingham, so I won't have to travel all over the state.
  4. Thank you all so much for your advice. We are still looking. My question is....Where are all of the inexpensive homes that are close to the interstate, take less than 15-20 min to get to UAB, have a big yard and nearby park for the dogs and are really nice!! :) :chuckle My husband and I are coming to B'ham again in the next few weeks to try and scope out the area. I am still interested in Crestwood/Avondale although someone said it seemed unsafe when they lived there. When we drove through looking at homes it seemed very quite, lots of the houses have been remodled, young and old people were out walking their dogs and running and most of the houses were somewhat affordable in the low 200's or high 190's. I felt pretty safe. Maybe the further out you go it gets worse? Pleasant Grove and Pelham are still in the running although I'm thinking that may be too far out because I seriously do not want to drive more than 20 minutes to school. Please keep the postings on good/bad neighborhoods for people and dogs (we have 3), and traffic and the drive in from different areas coming. It is much appreciated. Thanks again to all who have posted already!-jenn

Bryan, I am currently living in atlanta, on the northeast side inside the perimeter (chamblee area). I love it here. If you are looking for good experience in either ICU or ER then I suggest you go to Atlanta Medical or Grady. Both have alot of trauma but AM has a bit more structure and support than Grady. Both are in the downtown area. I worked at AMC and found it to be a great learning experience. If you have any more questions about Atlanta, feel free to PM me or ask.

I too am looking to relocate to B'ham for anesthesia school this fall and would like some help locating a good neighborhood. I want to be within 15-20 minutes or closer of UAB and will need to buy a house. Any suggestions for location would be GREATLY appreciated. jen
  7. Thank you all so much for your replies. My husband and I are moving from the Atlanta area and know that location is everything when it comes to traffic. We were in B'ham this past weekend and liked the Crestwood area...east of the city and very close to UAB. How would the traffic be from there? And possibly Pleasant grove and Hoover. We looked at a few houses in Adamsville, Gardendale, Irondale and etc but didn't have much luck. My biggest concern is the traffic...I don't want to be stuck in the car 45 min everyday. Any thoughts on the areas mentioned? Thanks!
  8. I will be moving to Birmingham, AL to attend UAB's anesthesia program this fall and need to find a place to live. I am looking to buy a house near the campus (atleast within 15-20 driving minutes or closer). If you have any knowledge of good neighborhoods in this area please let me know. Thanks in advance.
  9. MrsSandman, I think you and I have discussed UAB in a PM, but let me tell you again....RELAX. You will do just fine as long as you know the answers to all the WHY questions. UAB was my second of three interviews and was the most relaxing one by far. They just want to get to know you and why you are there. Judging by my experience I would say that grades play a huge role in their decision because my grades were exceptional and everything else (GRE and experience) were just average. Good luck! You will be fine! Hopefully I will see you there in the fall!
  10. Gump, How do you feel about the program and faculty in general? What do you feel are the positives/negatives about UAB? Do you feel at a disadvantage due to the larger class size? Have you started clinicals yet, and if so how is it? You can PM me if you would like. Thanks.
  11. UAB'S director, Mr. Williams, was AWESOME! He was VERY laid back and talked alot about things other than school or the interview. Samford's director was nice as well but he was ALL business. I suspect he would be just as likable outside of the circumstances of the interview though.
  12. MrsSandman, My interview at UAB went very well. I had heard it was more intense than Samford, but I did not find this to be true. The faculty was very nice, especially the director, he was AWESOME. I did not have any clinical questions at all, it was all personal and experience related. They simply ask why CRNA, why UAB, what kind of ICU experience I've had, why should they choose me, and strengths and weaknesses. It was all exactly what you would expect. I received my letter for acceptance to UAB the other day, so now I have to choose between Samford and UAB. Did you also interview at Samford? Good luck on your interview with UAB, you'll do great!
  13. Anyone accepted to UAB, University of Alabama at Birmingham?
  14. This is an interesting subject. How would one go about approaching an anesthesia group for such a contract? And how does the stipend work and why have I seen some people post that some groups offer this while others do not? Thanks.
  15. I am contemplating getting a PhD/Doctorate sometime in the future after completing a CRNA program. So, my dilemma is...should I attend a MSN or MSNA program? I eventually (much later in my career) think I would like to teach anesthesia/nursing at the college level. If I choose the MSNA program, will I be able to get my Doctorate in Nursing, since it is non-nursing? Or will I have to choose a anesthesia related field to get a Doctorate? If so, what related areas are common choices? Thanks in advance for any information.
