Nursing is a very stressful job, but I don't have to tell nurses that, do I.
Share your secrets.
What makes you keep coming back day after day?
Here's mine:
I nearly walked out one day, I was so discouraged with trying to keep up with all the patients who decided to have crises the moment I walked in the door. I didn't even get a chance to get Report on some of them before someone was crashing! So I got on the phone to one doc, explained the situation, and started asking for labs, tests, and medications, when all of a sudden the doctor said, "You know, I cannot believe you're asking me for all this."
Great, I thought. Here it comes. Another jerk.
"I think you're an EXCELLENT nurse," he continued.
I almost dropped the phone in shock. But I came back the next day because I felt like I finally had an ally instead of an antagonist in that doctor.
Awesome :)It never fails; just when I'm at the end of my rope and ready to bail... something happens to remind me of why I really do love this job (in spite of all my bitching about it lol).
I agree!! In my heart I am a nurse no matter how much I complain about my day. I love what I do. That does not mean I always love my job. But I do love what I do.
What do I do to relieve stress? Call in sick...seriously. I take a mental health day.
The patients do have me energized. I constantly read and my teaching in the clinic that I work for has greatly improved. When the patients come and look for me to teach them because I make it so simple keeps me going. But I will still take a mental health day when I need it to continue.
I just remember that no matter what I do as a profession, it is still work and at least my work I get to help families through difficult times.
I usually dread work until I get there, once I am there and in the swing of things I am fine.
I am fortunate that I work in a NICU, I feel that NICU nursing is most like the idealistic nursing I hoped I would practice when I was in school.

Very well said. I have found myself doing similarily most of the time, kind of like the carrot at the end of the stick!
