Telling your kids, "Just try. If you really don't feel good I'll come get you." Just stop. Guarantee they really won't feel good and there will be no magic words I can string together to talk little darling out of it!

Y'all- it just happened. A mom walked her kid in here. "He's had a stomach ache but I think it's because of his sinus drainage. But if he comes in today just call me."

Who's got the over/under for 0930?

He made it until 2 PM. Bless him!

That's when they get out of the car, walk straight into your clinic, and say, "My mom/dad said they'd come pick me up if I don't feel good."

And that's when I call mom/dad and tell them exactly what LD just told me. And it will be followed by, "Well I didn't mean - fill in the blank."

?

I do the exact same thing! "Your child is doing exactly what you told him to do; come to the clinic if he doesn't feel better once he gets to school." Even if it is 2 minutes after arriving to school. ?

If you show up in my clinic before....oh, say 10 AM, and you're afebrile and are not vomiting up your toenails, I will ask "Do you think mom/dad meant to come in right away when you got here or do you think they meant try to stay until lunchtime?" And 98% of the darlings will agree, go back to class, and I never see them again.

Incidentally, when you yell "Stop!" I am never sure if I'm supposed to collaborate and listen or what....

That is what I do as well. I call and let them know my assessment findings and follow it with "but your child stated that you told them that I had to call you if they came to see me"

Ok, sooooo guilty. Sorry. I give my kids the "just try" speech. And your right, half the time i get a call two hours after drop off.

I faked being sick so much in school, i tend to always be skeptical when my kids say they dont feel good. A few times i have basically told them to suck it up and then they turn out to really be sick. So then i spend the rest of the day feeling like the worst parent in the world.

As parents or nurses we can only go by the symptoms presented at the moment. No need for guilt. Just my opinion.

EXACTLY! I say: "I am here with so-and-so, who is not feeling well. They said they talked with you about it this morning and you said you could pick them up if they could not make it. Well, they are here now saying they 'cannot make it,' and are unable to tolerate *sitting in class."

*When a kid has no measurable clinical signs of illness (no fever, no vomiting, looks "fine," etc), I use this statement as a barometer. Can you tolerate sitting in class? If yes, then go sit in class. If no, then I will call home.

I hate it when they come in, straight from the bus, coat and boots still on...I don't feel good. I tell them that I never feel good at that hour of the day, go try breakfast and class and come see me later. With hat and coat I won't even try a temp. Now later it might be another story, but straight off the bus? Hard Pass!
