ok, it's never too early to start a thread about applying for 2011 ... ... which i am most definitely doing even though i am still waitlisted for 2010. i just won't be able to attend this year if i get in ...
but that's ok! i'll be done with all my prereqs and have time to write a better application (if in fact that is at all possible, you know?).
anyone else applying to stony brook for summer 2011?
Good Luck everyone! I'm currently in the 1-year program, so if you have any questions about anything feel free to ask.
Hi dfgo-
I actually have a few questions I'm hoping you can answer...
1) have you found the administration and professors to be helpful and supportive?
2) do you know the total number of clinical hours for the program?
3) on a more personal note, what is your opinion on the program thus far? do you feel like it was the right choice/ a positive experience?
So far I've found it really difficult to get any information from Stony Brook (or even get anyone on the phone) so I am a little concerned about being "just another number" at a large state school (which I was for my first degree). I've already been accepted to Rochester and they've been overwhelmingly helpful, but the cost is daunting so I'm hoping to hear some positive things from someone going through the Stony Brook program.
Thanks in advance for any insight you can give!
1) The teachers are definitely loads more helpful when you get here. I remember before I started it was impossible to get information from anyone! But I think they may be using all the resources to help the students who are already in the program, so prospective students think the administration isn't helpful at all, which couldn't be further from the truth. I was skeptical that the Professors were as great as I'd heard, but honestly they really are great--funny, caring, and helpful!
2) I'm not sure how many clinical hours we do, but it's probably upwards of 500. That number sounds more daunting than it is.... spread over a year, it's about one 12 hour shift each week.
3) I love this program!! I honestly can't imagine a better one. The faculty, the classes, my classmates, everything is better than I could have hoped for. I was actually conflicted about the idea of becoming a nurse before I enrolled, but now I am excited to start my career.
As for the fear of becoming another number: the nursing school is very small, especially the one year program. Professors take the time to learn our names, and we spend so much time together it's impossible not to get to know each other well... maybe too well. (haha, kidding) Every time I've had a problem I've gotten all the help I've needed right away. I highly recommend it!

Thank you SO much for your response!! I've been really conflicted as to whether or not I should wait to hear from Stony Brook or just jump in with both feet and go to Rochester (which, barring massive scholarships, would have me in debt forever). I think I'll hedge my bets and keep my fingers crossed that Stony Brook comes through.
Good luck in the final stretch of your program!

Was on waitlist until the end of June, then I got the boot! Again, ack!!
Remember lil ol' me
??? I remember you from last year. Yeah, I'm back ... and waiting again (not waitlist again I hope)!! Let's hope 2nd time is the charm!
erin, I took the TEAS V last November, it was required for 3 of my schools. It's actually NOT a bad exam at all, that's my opinion anyway. I got a 90. I used the ATI TEAS V study guide which I found very helpful. It's really all you need. PM me please and send me your email address, I can send you something that may help considering time is of the essence with preparation.
