Just wanted to start this thread to see if anyone else has applied to the 12 month accelerated nursing program at stony brook!
Sure, I don't mind sharing my stats!
I graduated this past June with a degree in Health Care Administration at a CUNY school. My cum GPA was a 3.8 and my prereq GPA was also a 3.8.
AP1 – A
AP2 – A
Micro – A
Chem – B+ (Lab – A-)
Nutrition – A
Stats – A
Gen Psych – A
Life & Development – A-
English – A
(Sorry, I don't remember what the exact pre-reqs for this school was since I applied to others.)
(Also, please do not be discouraged, I felt like I had really easy professors and the school over all was not that difficult).
My grades really catch your attention, but it's the personal statement and recommendation letter that really hooks you. I based my personal statement on a social problem and how nursing can help resolve it. It has a personal twist to it, because I included my past experience in public health and research to support why I want to be a nurse and how having these two additional lenses can help bring a unique perspective to improving patient care. I was a little nervous after submitting my statement only because it was 2.5 pages. But I kept it short, sweet, and to the point.
Although I did not read my recommendation letters, they came from a really great source, which I believe could have influenced the evaluators.
Honestly, I put a hold on my application by a year because I did not want to submit it unprepared. (By no means was I ready on paper!) The wait was well worth is because I got a really great job and plenty of experience that can support my interest in Nursing.
I did do volunteering work, but I did not include that in my application. I am also a certified phlebotomist, and only included that in my resume.
Interviews are mandatory and in person. It's apparently a group interview with other students, faculty and staff members. And will last three hours with a entry level exam of writing and math right after.
Does anyone know what to expect with these interviews? I need to prepare!
@soydelmonte I signed up for the 30th at 9 am, so odds are I will be done by noon assuming their 3 hours are accurate! I am very familiar with the campus... the hospital can be confusing initially to navigate. I am ignoring their parking and hospital directions because I am used to a much easier way haha. You can enter the health science center without even stepping foot in the hospital. I live around 25 min from campus. Yes you are right! We won't have to worry about stamina issues on their part
@Enrique301
I graduated in May of 2015 with a B.S. in Biology from SBU. My cum GPA was a 3.65. My pre-req GPA is just about a 4.0... what brought my overall GPA down was my calculus and organic chem class grades from my 1st and 2nd years of college at Stony Brook.
AP1 – A
AP2 – A (Stony Brook has a very peculiar way of doing AP since it is not just 1 or 2 courses so this will suffice lol)
Micro – A
Chem – A- (Lab – A)
Nutrition – Have not taken nutrition
Stats – A
Gen Psych – A
Life & Development – (taking it now at SUNY SCCC)
English – A
I have also taken many more science courses than listed here because i was previously considering other healthcare directions and was a biology major
My recommendations letters were from healthcare providers i have worked for and some professors. I was also connected with a SBU ABSN Alum who is now a NP through the campus' career center who has been working with me. My personal statement was a flow of my personality, how that related to a fit in a career of nursing, and how my healthcare experiences have prepared me for the field.
I was an undergraduate teaching assistant and research assistant during undergrad. I volunteered for a bit at Stony Brook University Medical Center, have experience as an EMT, medical scribe, and physical therapy aide.
Not sure what to really expect from the group interview, but am asking my career center mentor if he has some input and advice . He interviewed there a long time ago however.
For those that are wondering, the group interview is very straight forward - no need to stress too much. There's no way to really prepare for it, they'll ask you some random questions about nursing, and some personal questions as well. It's a group of about 5-6 people, and they randomize the order in which people answer for every question. Also, two professors in the program conduct the group interviews. They're very friendly and do a good job in making it a comfortable environment.

Good luck to everyone in their eventual interviews! I've been obsessing over other forums and seems like most people in the forums get emails for interviews.
