Just wanted to start this thread to see if anyone else has applied to the 12 month accelerated nursing program at stony brook!
Haha I know right. 7 is a lot but these programs are super competitive and I really don't want to take an additional gap year being that I just graduated college, and will have to start supporting myself soon.
Yea I completely agree with you. I can't believe almost every program is this competitive, but it makes sense. Good luck!
I submitted everything August 11th. If I haven't received an email yet does that mean i'm out?
That's the same thing I'm wondering, because I submitted Sept. 28th. If we knew how they reviewed the applications, maybe we'd get a better idea. But for now, I think there's really no way of knowing. To me, it seems like they're sending invites first to the ones they like (for lack of a better word) the most.
@JP0927 TRUST ME. I'm REALLY nervous about paying for Columbia. Stony Brook is a lot lighter on the pockets and wouldn't require me to take that big of a loan at all.
My good friend from college is currently at Columbia for their MDE/DNP program. He said off the bat most students received $25,000 scholarship or grant for financial need. There is also an additional $10,000 for students who are of a minority. This adds to be about $35,000 in just aid if I'm REALLY lucky. I'm looking to scope out some scholarship to knock off a few thousand dollars.
As for loans, I believe graduate degree programs in health allow for a loan of $25-30,000 dollars. Which means I would have to take out the rest of the money from loans. I really have no other advice, because I myself have no idea how the process works. Regardless I'm looking to take out at least $70-80,000. (WHICH MY FAMILY DOES NOT HAVE). It's definitely doable, because my friend had 0 income coming into Columbia.
As for the second wave of interviews:
I thought the first round of interviews would be based off people who submitted their applications early, but I submitted my application one week before the deadline and made it through to the first round of interviews. It does sound like they're handpicking the ones that stand out most to them, and then reviewing the pile again to pick out who else was interesting. There should be a third round if I remember correctly (but with less invitations).
Congratulations to everyone who received an email! Looking forward to sharing our experiences with each other!

Still helpful information!! Makes me feel better that I'm not the only one considering to take out a huge loan like that if it has to come down to it. As for scholarships, I'm sure there's many. Thank you!

To piggy back off of what @soydelmonte said, which is all true, I went to Columbia's info session recently and the admissions director said he purposely wasn't going to go over the financials in detail as they normally would, reason being because they said they're in the process of revamping the tuition and aid program. They anticipate getting another (approx) $3 million or so in funding to put towards scholarship money which will boost the approx $25k in scholarship each student in the program gets. Also, they mentioned trying to get the tuition amount down a little from the $100k its currently at, so with all that in mind, they said to just look out for an email in the coming weeks/months with changes to cost/aid. He seemed pretty convincing to the fact that something is definitely going to be changed by the time this next class would start that would only help compared to what the current financials are, and he also said he doesn't want anyone to get discouraged or rule out the program on cost because they really do everything they can to help students finance the education, even if its sitting down with you individually to go over aid packages, loan options etc. so don't lose hope over the cost, they really seem to go out of their way to make sure you can attend if you get in/want to!
