Can we make this the official thread for The Stony Brook Accelerated Nursing Class of 2016. Let's start posting questions and suggestions here.
So my stats are super average, super borderline. I just graduated from undergrad in May with a degree in Kinesiology (thought I wanted to do PT). I have a 3.5 cum GPA and a 3.5 pre-req GPA. I have great recommendations (but doesn't everybody) and what I think is a good essay (but again, everyone probably has a great essay). I do have health care experience, but I'm very nervous my GPA isn't quite there. I'm also not from NY, so I'm not sure if that makes it harder to get into or not. Guess I'll find out soon though!
Jmu, being from NY I would think doesn't have much to do with their decision. I would expect they'd want people from other places so their population is very diverse. When I went there (1 semester for undergrad) it was VERY diverse. You have great stats! Don't sell yourself short. Good luck!!
Nurseaddict, this is the stony brook accelerated forum. If you didn't apply there, and think there are unsavory opinions about the program, I'm not sure why you would be on this forum. Just confused.
Let's see. I have a BA and a MSW (master's of social work). My obtained my MSW at Stony Brook HSC. My cumulative GPA is around a 3.5 (3.0 undergrad, 3.9 graduate plus prerequisites). In terms of science prerequisites:
A&P1 - A
A&P2 - A
Chem - B+
Statistics - A
Lifespan Human Development - A
I have to take Microbiology in the Spring, but I'm confident.
My professional experience is all in the health and human services field. I'm currently working as a grant writer. I have no recent "volunteer" experience but I do things through work. I think my references are strong.
Hi Jmu, I do not think your stats are super average or borderline. I think having a diverse background such as not being from NY definitely will help you than hurt you. As for your gpa, 3.5 is a pretty great gpa for pre reqs and an overall. My gpa was quite lower in the 3.0 range when I applied and got accepted into the program in 2013. I think what helped me though were my solid recommendations and essay. You will actually be surprised at how many people apply to the program with solid gpas and not recommendations/personal statement. Do not feel nervous about your gpa!
