It's almost september, which means people are starting to get their applications for nursing together real soon. I'm currently in the 1-yr nursing program here at Stony Brook. A previous alum started the 2014 thread for us, so I figured I do the same. Feel free to ask questions or message me with them. Good luck to everyone applying! :)
What did you love and not love about the program? Thanks for reaching out to us! :)
By far the best thing about the program is your classmates. Relying and bonding with them will definitely make the biggest difference between you loving the program and how much you will get out of it. The teachers and clinical faculty were mostly incredible, there will certainly be a few here and there that you might not like (depending on how much theyre involved/still involved when you guys start) but overall theyre all excellent. The clinical experience was also very very good, I overwhelmingly loved all of mine (although psych/peds were kind of boring).
As for the negatives, by FAR FAR FAR the biggest is organization. This program is extraordinarily unorganized at times. Whether its them having issues with your schedule (sometimes giving you your classes literally the day before you start) or just confusion in the program in general, its a pretty abundantly clear issue. Also there were a few (not many) classes that were really just extraordinarily unorganized and poorly planned, that I felt like many of us got almost nothing out of. One of them was because of a replacement teacher had to replace the normal teacher, so at least I understand why (so it likely wont be an issue at all for you) the other they have absolutely no excuses for and was just a mess.
Another big complaint of mine was to prepare for the NCLEX they really pushed "NCLEX 10,000" (some online software on us) as the most important (and really only thing) to do to study for the boards. I dont know of many who found that software even remotely useful at all, I thought it was completely terrible and of almost no benefit at all personally.
Overall the program is really excellent though, I know I had some long negatives in there, but I cant deny that I loved it. I definitely got a great deal out of it, and would do it again in a heartbeat. And for anyone who gets into it, I have to strongly strongly push making sure you socialize/bond with your classmates because its by far going to make the biggest difference
Oh my goodness, yes! But good things come to those who (patiently) wait...right?
ash6117, Agniesia80, did either of you get a call yet?
I've still not received a call for an interview. I'm super bummed- I thought my GPA was unremarkably average, but I have quite a lot of volunteer experience and I work full time with patients in a major NYC hospital. C'est la vie. Fingers, toes, arms, legs, and eyes crossed for good news later this month! :)
The wait is slowly but surely getting to me too! After looking back at previous class's threads, I'm getting nervous that we'll receive an email telling us that the notification timeline has been pushed back. But, I'm hoping that the interview process will somehow help speed the process of making admissions decisions up, rather than slow it down. Is that possible?
