Stony Brook Accelerated BSN class of 2013

I was at the June 19th info session. I am applying for the 2014 accelerated program, any advice? I'm working on my essay now

I had to think back ... yes, that was me! :) Identity revealed, lol. It was an NCLEX review day, that is why I was at school :)

Without knowing what exactly the committee looks for, all I can say is that you should pour your heart out in that essay. Make it personal, and demonstrate through words how you would be the student and nurse that would make Stony Brook proud. Likewise, recommendations should attest to your promise as both a student and as a future nurse. I recommend at least one from a professor that taught you A&P or micro and in which you got a grade of A. Those professors can speak best to who will be an awesome nurse (as opposed to an English professor).

Although grades matter, people think a perfect 4.0 will get them in. Not true. Plenty of us in my class were not in that category, but had something else that made them unique.

i am currently a graduate student at sbu, do you think a recommendation from a current professor is a good idea? i took two semesters of research statistics and will take a psychopathology/psychopharmacology class this fall. thanks for taking the time to answer all my questions, lol.

no, did not take nclex yet. i am still waiting on my authorization to test (att) document so i can schedule a date. some of my classmates have received theirs, so it's clearly imminent. i expect to take the exam late aug or early sept.

a prof writing a letter for you to get into nursing school should really be able to explain how you will be an asset to the nursing profession (using examples to back up what they say) and your success in the nursing program as evidenced by your success in their course. naturally, this is easy to do with a&p professors and with micro professors, as these prereqs are directly related to nursing school coursework. these types of profs have often written many letters of reference for other nursing school applicants, so they must know how to write them well. check to see whether the profs you are considering have written nursing school recommendations before, i think the ones that have will give you a better result.

Hey everyone, I am new to this thread. I am having difficulty finding the current application, I do not know the prompt for the personal statement. Can anyone help me? Also, about letters of recommendation, I am wondering whether this is a good line up. I have a letter from a clinical research coordinator that I have work with for two years, an ER MD that I have also worked under, and a mentor that I have worked under who has their PhD in Education. I can also get a letter of recommendation from a Research Coordinator Nurse, but it might not be as good as those first three. I am pretty much all set with everything else. I just need to send everything in. Thoughts, comments, advice? Anything would be appreciated. Thanks!!

Update: I took the NCLEX recently: PASSED

Notice I changed my username accordingly, lol. I can confidently say Stony Brook does prepare you well for nursing, not that I had any doubt before, just that passing NCLEX makes it that much easier to say. Most everyone I know from my class has passed the exam that has taken it. We are bound to have an impressive pass rate this year.

The current application for next's year program is not available yet. The website says it will be available sometime in early September, so any day now.

Thank you Buckeroo! But in fact, I have had a job at the hospital since July Been working as a grad nurse, now that I passed I become an RN. The struggle is over, now onward to build this career!

Thanks! It's great. I am working on the same unit where I completed clinical and capstone so once I started working as a nurse I was already familiar with the floor quite a bit. Stony Brook being a teaching hospital is an ideal starting place. Even if you don't start out at Stony Brook, I recommend new grads start out in a teaching hospital ... i.e., any hospital with a clear affiliation to a university.

Hey paco Congratulations on passing NCLEX and obtaining a job. I have a question I'm trying to sign up for pre-requisites. Do you know how I should go about doing that? Do I call the school?
