Stony Brook Accelerated BSN class of 2013

U.S.A. New York

Hey all! Just wanted to lend my support to anyone else who is applying to SB next summer! It's a grueling process :-)):yeah:

hello I know this thread is from previous applicants from previous years. But I was wondering if anyone would have some insight on the qualifications since it is so competitive. My G.P.A. for all colleges attended is a 3.3. I recently was exceptect into LIU Brooklyn's accelerated program and did the first summer semester. I took Fundamentals of Nursing, Geriatrics, Pathophysiology, Pharmacology, and Medication Administration in 8 weeks. It was a grueling process and I was also wondering if it is as difficult. My G.P.A for the summer semester was a 3.2. I recently had to withdraw from LIU because it is 16,000 dollars a semester and i was commuting from shoreham. I could not affort the commute and the schools tuition. I am submitting my application for accelerated nursing program today. I was wondering if any graduates from Stony Brook think that since I already did a semester in an accelerated program that it might put me at an advantage. I am also going to apply to the 2 year program as a back up.

Hey paco Congratulations on passing NCLEX and obtaining a job. I have a question I'm trying to sign up for pre-requisites. Do you know how I should go about doing that? Do I call the school?

Thanks Dlam! If you want to sign up for prereqs, you don't have to do them @ Stony Brook. You can do them at any accredited college. You're better off doing them @ a community college since it would be cheaper. Or if you are already @ Stony Brook, do them there. Depending on whether you are pursuing an accelerated or basic BSN program, the prereqs are a little different but they both have some similarities, such as A&P, micro, chem (I think), statistics and developmental psych. You might want to check on the website what is current, or speak to the school directly.

I completed the accelerated program this past summer. You will want to speak to the school directly regarding your situation. I don't know of any student in my class that completed a summer at another ABSN and started ours (although there were about 4 students that started the ADN at Suffolk CC and jumped ship when they got into Stony Brook, but from what I understand they did not have any advantage or transfer credit). The only advantage you will have is the prior exposure you had to the material, but I don't believe you will be granted credit. You will likely have to repeat these courses, but I am not sure. Additionally, you have already received grades in these courses, so NOW they have some idea of how you would perform in a nursing program -- so not sure how that will come into play in admissions. Best to contact the school.

Anyone who is applying to Stony Brook and live in the city I have a question. Stony Brook requires laboratory portions for the microbiology and anatomy and physiology classes. Anyone know where to take those classes in the city?

Hey Dlam88, I live in the city and am currently in the program at Stony. I took all my pre reqs at BMCC. As Paco said, you can take them at any accredited school so if I were you i'd pick the CUNY most convenient to you and bang them out there. Can't beat CUNY prices.

Thank you Paco I will contact the school and try to speak with them because I am sending in my application tomorrow for the ABSN.

hi all! your stories are so inspiring (esp Paco's!). You are a determined bunch. 64 seats out of 700 is crazy. I originally applied to SB as my backup for this upcoming summer session but did not anticipate it would be so difficult to be accepted. My creds are ok but 2/3 of my recs are from non-academic/ medical supervisors. I wish I read these threads earlier!!! I am realizing that I probably don't have much of a chance getting in. :-(

My question is: how is SB with financial aid? The program is not scarily priced but any financial aid is better than none. I've been going through threads but haven't read every single page and a search on allnurses.com was fruitless. If you know where the answer is, you can just link me. Thank you so much for your help and good luck everyone!

Hi All,

I just received this email from Stony Brook,

"The School of Nursing will be sending out admissions decisions for the

Accelerated One Year Nursing Program beginning the week of Monday, January

7, 2013. The decisions will go out over the course of several days so

please do not be concerned if you have not heard from us by Friday, January

11. You may email or call us if you have not heard by Monday, January 14."

Hopefully this date isn't pushed back.

I would be utterly SHOCKED if they kept to that promise! :p

Paco, is Stonybrook notorious for sending out admission decision letters super late? I've read through some previous threads (not every single page of course) but can't remember if this is the case...

In one word: YES. That has been the case for the last 2 years I would say. However, with the recent email that was sent to the 2013 candidates (stating decisions will be sent starting the week of 1/7/13), we will have to wait to see how true they stick to their claim this year.

Thanks for the info Paco. I did go back and read the old thread. Some people didn't receive admissions info til the very last minute. How nerve racking! On the thread, SB class of 2014, folks have been reporting acceptance emails. I still haven't received any info but my friend, who is SB alumni, received her acceptance email today. Her last name begins with an H. I think its great that SB is on time, in some regards, in releasing admissions decisions...

Can anyone tell me what there process was like? I am nervous about upcoming application?
