Stony Brook ABSN Class of 2022

Stony Brook School of Nursing has recently opened the undergraduate application portal for the 2021 school year. I was part of an allnurses thread for their Basic BSN program last year, and the information and support from other applicants was amazing; so I jumped on creating a thread for this cycle as soon as applications became available.

Any questions or even just casual discussion about the program is more than welcome! Can’t wait to talk to all of you. ?

I would say interview invites are sent approximately 2-3 weeks after the application’s due date. Based on previous years’ threads, I’d assume acceptance and rejection emails are sent out between December and January. Hopefully the pandemic won’t change that too much!

Most of my resume included my clinical experiences as a Nursing Assistant and Telemetry Monitor Technician for an ICU because I wrote out some of my specific duties/skills for each of the clinical positions I’ve held.

Thanks for sharing! Do you know if SBU prefers students with lots of experience under their belt? I ask because I'm making a career change, or attempting to at least, and have no medical experience.

There’s a new Dean in charge of Nursing admissions and although the old one gave more importance to high gpas, from what I’ve heard this new Dean puts more emphasis on the overall applicant and medical experience. I’ve seen a huge shift among a lot of nursing programs lately wanting students with clinical experience, one of my friends who applied to ABSN programs last year said that a few places she applied and interviewed with said that they have had times where they accept students without any experience or knowledge on what exactly Nursing entails and they drop out because they didn’t understand beforehand what they were getting themselves into. How’d you do in your pre-req courses? I heard they put on emphasis on that too!

I have A's in all my prereq courses I have done, so I'm reeeeally relying on that, my recommendation letters, and a strong essay!

Just curious, how many other programs is everyone applying to? I’m applying to Binghamton, UB, and Villanova as of right now but I have other programs on my list whose app due dates aren’t until January in case I need back up plans.

I’m also planning on applying to Molloy, Adelphi, and Suffolk County Community College. I was going to apply to Farmingdale as well, but I believe their program starts in the Spring only, which wouldn’t work out for me this coming school year.

@aspiring NP It depends on when you took it and which classes. For the science classes Anatomy & Physiology 1 and 2 and Microbiology w/lab it has to be in person unless you took it this Summer or this upcoming fall. The other prerequisites can be taken online or in person, the semester doesn’t matter. Hope this helps!
