Stony Brook School of Nursing has recently opened the undergraduate application portal for the 2021 school year. I was part of an allnurses thread for their Basic BSN program last year, and the information and support from other applicants was amazing; so I jumped on creating a thread for this cycle as soon as applications became available.
Any questions or even just casual discussion about the program is more than welcome! Can’t wait to talk to all of you. ?
"Due to the volume of applications and documents received, the School of Nursing will begin sending out Accelerated Program decisions in mid-January and continue sending decisions through to the end of the month. The School is fastidiously working to ensure that decisions are processed as quickly as possible, and your patience is sincerely appreciated during this very busy time."
I am running out of time....

Same. Out of all the other schools I've applied to, SBU's process is the most aggravating

So now I’m in the middle of nowhere waiting on Stony and another program which still has not notified me yet?
And this is what schools don’t understand and it sucks. It’s a simple yes or no!

The 9th is a Saturday this year, so I wonder if they’ll send them by Monday the 11th.
Wow decisions are taking so long now! I received my decision for SBU one-year program on December 18, 2018 when I applied for the previous cycle two years ago. I ended up choosing the two year program and am currently set to graduate this May. If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask! Good luck to everyone!

Question: What does your typical weekly schedule look like in the 2 year program? How many classes a semester and what is their scheduling like? Are you working along with doing the program?

For the last 1.5 years, I’ve mostly had classes anywhere from 2 days to 4 days a week (never all 5 days), not including clinicals. Any of your free days can be taken up and used for clinicals (either 1 or 2 per week, depending on the semester) – including Saturdays and Sundays. There will be times where there will be almost back to back lectures where you have 1 hour in between one lecture to the next ie. 9AM to 12PM and then 1PM to 4PM, so you can use that 1 hour in between for lunch, etc.
First semester was 5 classes, second semester was 3, and now the last two semesters we are taking 4 classes each. Most classes will be 3 hours long and once a week, however, there are classes where you don’t meet every week, and there is a specific schedule (ie. You meet twice a month and it will be outlined). We also have lab days (anywhere from like 30 minutes to 3 hours) for classes where we have to go in during our assigned times to practice different sets of skills. These usually fit in during our off days or sometimes before/after a class. You can start clinicals as early as 6AM and end as late as 9PM, while classes usually start at 8AM earliest and end as late as 7:30PM (so far at least).
I am not working along with the program, but I do know a lot of friends in the program that are working and balancing jobs on the side, club organizations, and different roles on the campus (such as Resident Assistant) – and they do balance it well. Even with the clinicals and classes, you should still have at least 1-2 completely free days per week.
My experience has been a bit different than how it traditionally was with the COVID situation. Hope that helps!
