Hi everyone!
It's been a minute since I posted a thread. Fast forward .. I'm 7 weeks into a 15 week semester. Everything has been going well. At first it was hard for me to adjust to everything but now that I have, I've been doing good... up until a couple of days ago.
I took an exam last Friday. I felt pretty confident about it. Grades came back and I got .... a 62! What?! I knew for a fact I didn't make a 62 so the first thing I did was email my professor and explain to her that there was no way I failed the exam so I wanted to come in and review my test.
Well, today I reviewed my test. Come to find out I didn't make a 62. The scantron machine didn't pick up on some of my answers. 11 of them to be exact. So I asked my professor, "Since I did get the right answers and marked them on my scantron correctly this means I can get my grade changed to what it should be, right?" She goes on to say and I quote, "I'm not sure if I'm going to give you credit because you didn't follow directions. You didn't mark your answers dark enough. I will have to think about it."
So, basically what I got out of that is even if I did get the correct answers on my scantron she may or may not give me the grade I'm really suppose to have. I'm sorry, but fair is fair. It's one thing if I had the answers marked on my actual test and not the scantron, but I have the correct answers on the scantron! It's not my fault the machine didn't pick it up.
If she doesn't give me credit I'm definitely going to go talk to someone else and fight it if I have to. What would you do?

chile as busy as i am i dont have time for BS. I would be on CNN or at least the local news lol
How could someone not take offense? Your remark was incredibly insulting to everyone who uses traditional brick and mortar educational institutions.
SMH you really need to not take offense to an opinion here, I've already explained that my intent was not to offend, I expressed MY opinion, take it for what it's worth, one opinion from some random person. online programs are routinely disregarded as not valuable by many, I was just offering some alternative view and opinion. If you took offense then you need to not let your imagination run wild. Can we just move on?
Thanks for all the responses.
To answer some of the questions, no, I wasn't the only one. It had to be about 10 of us in the room that all had the same problem. My thing is this, my marks couldn't have been too light because I marked all my answers the same and it picked up on most of them. And, this isn't my first test. I have taken several other exams with the same scantron and didn't have any problems up until now.
@mrsboots87-it was 11 questions, not 11 points. 22 points to be exact. That's a pretty big deal.
But I honestly think it's the machine, not the students. I got another test grade back and a 52 was posted! Many other students also got failing grades back that definitely should have passed.
The professor whose class I got a 62 in had her e-mail up in class (on a big projection board so no, I wasn't just being nosey), and I saw where another professor (the one whose test I got a 52 on) e-mailed her and told her to re-check a couple student's scantrons because she was having problems with the scantron machine.
With that being said, someone obviously knows there is something wrong with the scantron machine so I don't think we should be penalized for it. Get a new scantron machine or just hand grade the tests. I'm not sure how the other students feel about it being a possibility that they may or may not get credit for their correct answers, but if I don't I'm definitely going up the chain of command.
I'm sorry this happened to you and I would most probably fight for those points, especially considering how many were lost. This makes me glad we take computerized tests at my school. We take our test and get our results immediately, usually with rationales. I haven't seen a scantron sheet in ages.
Sorry, but this is ridiculous. If this is not addressed, take it up the chain as far as you need to (ex-your school ombudsman, Dean of Students, or appeals committee). I am a nursing professor, and this is laziness to the extreme. If your scantron is broken, get the darn thing fixed or use another method such as online testing. It's rather scary that this is a known issue and has still not been addressed. If your school is ACEN accredited, it must show that students have curricular input. This would be first on my list to ask my student representative to address. I am embarrassed to be associated with an instructor who would blame a student instead of fixing the technology, or reassuring the students that the tests would be hand-graded.
Not everyone can handle the online format, it takes a special and smart individual to learn independently. I understand some need to be cradled and spoon fed the information.
Wow, that's pretty rude to insinuate that people who don't like online programs are less intelligent and need to be cradled. The want to have in class instruction vs online reading assignments and tests only does not make either option any less or more difficult. FYI, most of my pre reqs were done online. I aced them. My opinion was not because it's just so hard I can't do it online. It's because it's extremely easy to pass an online class. Even with proctored tests. Online consists of at home quizzes with writing assignments, some exams in person on campus, and weekly reading. Their is no real discussion. And online discussion will never be as good as in person discussion with the instructor. I would even go as far as to say an online school would actually be easier. You don't have to see anybody. You just write papers and take quizzes and don't really have to actually learn if you don't want to. In class is anything but cradled learning. It gives you the ability to hear the instructor explain and expand on the reading and give real life examples to really solidify your knowledge. Hence why there are not any GOOD online nursing schools. Get over yourself.

You are acting high and mighty and it is pretty ridiculous that you don't understand why your remark was offensive. You basically stated that only incredibly smart people can handle online school and that everyone who doesn't go to online school is less intelligent and need to be spoon fed information. And that is not a wild running imagination. It is a pretty literal interpretation of your "opinion". This attitude won't get you very far or make you many friends. I can only hope it is an online persona and you are not this rude in real life.
Also, FYI, just because it is "only your opinion" doesn't make it ok to say and doesn't mean everyone should be accepting of you saying it. I think some people are ugly. I however have to ability to keep that OPINION to myself because it would hurt their feelings. I would never have the audacity to tell them to their face and then say to basically suck it up and deal because it's just an opinion, then expect them not to be hurt by it. Time for someone to grow and learn some common decency.

Wowza. Well that's a whole different story then. You should definitely get your points back if it is two separate classes with multiple students being affected. Sounds like a faulty machine and the teacher shouldn't be so harsh about being asked for a corrected score to be input. You def have a leg to stand on if this has to go any higher than your teacher. GL and hope it gets fixed soon.

Haven't been here lately, too busy with school. Had some free time, so I stopped by.
Anyway
Hun, they won't move on. Never in my life have I been on a site where people take EVERYTHING so personal. Is it that serious? A comment someone made that's their opinion has you soooooo upset??? Really? Ridiculous.
To those who took offense to Liberated847 comment: Get over it. Grow up. Learn that everybody won't feel, think, believe, behave, say as you do and so on. Doesn't make one right or wrong.
I'm sure someone will be offended by my comment.
Before I forget:
I prefer online classes. Its convenient, work is easier, you don't have to be around the cattiness among students and it frees up time for other things. I think there are pros and cons to in class vs online class. Depends on the student...

I definitely see your point on this, but how light were the marks is my question. I have never had a scantron not pick up my answers. Our instructors are very forgiving and would probably give us the points but with a very stern warning that if we don't mark correctly, we won't get them next time. Nursing school can be very unforgiving. I'm sorry this happened to you.
