Sticky situation .. What would you do?

Published

Hi everyone!

It's been a minute since I posted a thread. Fast forward .. I'm 7 weeks into a 15 week semester. Everything has been going well. At first it was hard for me to adjust to everything but now that I have, I've been doing good... up until a couple of days ago.

I took an exam last Friday. I felt pretty confident about it. Grades came back and I got .... a 62! What?! I knew for a fact I didn't make a 62 so the first thing I did was email my professor and explain to her that there was no way I failed the exam so I wanted to come in and review my test.

Well, today I reviewed my test. Come to find out I didn't make a 62. The scantron machine didn't pick up on some of my answers. 11 of them to be exact. So I asked my professor, "Since I did get the right answers and marked them on my scantron correctly this means I can get my grade changed to what it should be, right?" She goes on to say and I quote, "I'm not sure if I'm going to give you credit because you didn't follow directions. You didn't mark your answers dark enough. I will have to think about it."

So, basically what I got out of that is even if I did get the correct answers on my scantron she may or may not give me the grade I'm really suppose to have. I'm sorry, but fair is fair. It's one thing if I had the answers marked on my actual test and not the scantron, but I have the correct answers on the scantron! It's not my fault the machine didn't pick it up.

If she doesn't give me credit I'm definitely going to go talk to someone else and fight it if I have to. What would you do?

This is awful. I hope you are able to get the points. Please be careful in how you handle the situation. I would only communicate with the instructor via email. Watch your tone, and carefully choose your words. The emails will be proof in the event you are not awarded the points and file a complaint.

Do not under any circumstances start a petition, sign a petition, post on facebook, text, email etc with other students about the issue. Nothing good will come by doing these things, only trouble. I understand you are not the only student affected by this. However, deal with it privately.

Wishing you well!!!!

Haven't been here lately, too busy with school. Had some free time, so I stopped by.

Anyway

Hun, they won't move on. Never in my life have I been on a site where people take EVERYTHING so personal. Is it that serious? A comment someone made that's their opinion has you soooooo upset??? Really? Ridiculous.

To those who took offense to Liberated847 comment: Get over it. Grow up. Learn that everybody won't feel, think, believe, behave, say as you do and so on. Doesn't make one right or wrong.

I'm sure someone will be offended by my comment.

Before I forget:

I prefer online classes. Its convenient, work is easier, you don't have to be around the cattiness among students and it frees up time for other things. I think there are pros and cons to in class vs online class. Depends on the student...

Thanks for your comment. I decided to let all the people that got offended be offended as nothing I can say will help them develop a little thicker skin.

So if im understanding you correctly, you think it is ok for someone to state an offensive comment and anyone who takes offense to said comment is childish and needs to grow up? interesting. I wasnt aware tht when someone says something, that everyone who doesnt agree or who gets offended needs to just shut up and take it. I am not offended by your comment, I just dont understand the logic.

But I can say that I agree with you on the online being convenient. Its why I took most of my pre reqs online. I have kids and its just easier for me. I just dont agree that people who dont like online or just dont learn well online are less intelligent and find it rude to say (not that you implied that).

And as I understand that not everybody agrees with everybody and that is all fine and dandy, there should also be some common decency among people. Essentially calling all brick and mortar students stupid and spoon fed is more than just an opinion. Its an insult. One can have an opinion without being insulting. If you dont take offense to that, then thats fine and dandy and good for you. But it doesnt mean that no one else is aloud to without being deemed childish. Especially seeing as it is "just my opinion" that it was rude and you agree that I have the right to state that opinion without you getting in a huff about it.

Not everyone can handle the online format, it takes a special and smart individual to learn independently. I understand some need to be cradled and spoon fed the information.

Snarky much?

A decent program encourages independent study along with working with others.

Try to remain from such blatant and rude generalizations. You'd be surprised how much easier life gets

Great advice from someone who assumes the worst, thanks but I'll pass.

No good nursing programs are completely online. I wouldn't want to take such a hard program online even if their were more options for online nursing.

That, to me is a very judgmental remark...I don't believe that you can judge a nursing program on how it is delivered...some of us have no choice to take online classes to further our nursing, and taking them from reputable schools too....

That being said, I would go further up the chain for a resolution to your grade issue...I have to deal with online or proctored exams which utilize computer exams generated by my professors, and quizzes and assignments marked by an actual human being...both have a margin for error. You must have done it right, otherwise you wouldn't have gotten any mark.

Go to the dean/director of nursing at your school and have a chat with them. I'm going to be unprofessional, but appropriate when I say that your instructor is an evil witch (not the word I would have chosen), and needs to understand that technology, while fast and efficient, is not 100% reliable.

An example I would have given her is that if it were a patient utilizing technology such as an automatic blood pressure cuff, and the cuff said the patients baseline blood pressure were within norms, but come to find out when taken manually they were running hypertensive, we would correct the machine and give the patient their medication, not have the machine be the end all solve all.

I'm sorry for your teachers bad judgement and lack of professionalism. Good luck to you! :-)

2. Go to your handbook to see who is in the next line to go to besides her. Stay professional, don't whine. Just state the facts.

3. Best wishes! :nurse:

Ok I'm ending this silly argument, I apologize if I offended anyone, let's get back to the thread's original topic. I concede that there are many learning formats for many learning styles. Good enough? Or should I kneel lol :)
