Sticky situation .. What would you do?

Published

Hi everyone!

It's been a minute since I posted a thread. Fast forward .. I'm 7 weeks into a 15 week semester. Everything has been going well. At first it was hard for me to adjust to everything but now that I have, I've been doing good... up until a couple of days ago.

I took an exam last Friday. I felt pretty confident about it. Grades came back and I got .... a 62! What?! I knew for a fact I didn't make a 62 so the first thing I did was email my professor and explain to her that there was no way I failed the exam so I wanted to come in and review my test.

Well, today I reviewed my test. Come to find out I didn't make a 62. The scantron machine didn't pick up on some of my answers. 11 of them to be exact. So I asked my professor, "Since I did get the right answers and marked them on my scantron correctly this means I can get my grade changed to what it should be, right?" She goes on to say and I quote, "I'm not sure if I'm going to give you credit because you didn't follow directions. You didn't mark your answers dark enough. I will have to think about it."

So, basically what I got out of that is even if I did get the correct answers on my scantron she may or may not give me the grade I'm really suppose to have. I'm sorry, but fair is fair. It's one thing if I had the answers marked on my actual test and not the scantron, but I have the correct answers on the scantron! It's not my fault the machine didn't pick it up.

If she doesn't give me credit I'm definitely going to go talk to someone else and fight it if I have to. What would you do?

Online schools are crappy.....and all ppl do is cheat. If you go to one just don't tell anyone if you want to be taken seriously. Are you going to base your license on what you copied from your friend?

So if im understanding you correctly, you think it is ok for someone to state an offensive comment and anyone who takes offense to said comment is childish and needs to grow up? interesting. I wasnt aware tht when someone says something, that everyone who doesnt agree or who gets offended needs to just shut up and take it. I am not offended by your comment, I just dont understand the logic.

But I can say that I agree with you on the online being convenient. Its why I took most of my pre reqs online. I have kids and its just easier for me. I just dont agree that people who dont like online or just dont learn well online are less intelligent and find it rude to say (not that you implied that).

And as I understand that not everybody agrees with everybody and that is all fine and dandy, there should also be some common decency among people. Essentially calling all brick and mortar students stupid and spoon fed is more than just an opinion. Its an insult. One can have an opinion without being insulting. If you dont take offense to that, then thats fine and dandy and good for you. But it doesnt mean that no one else is aloud to without being deemed childish. Especially seeing as it is "just my opinion" that it was rude and you agree that I have the right to state that opinion without you getting in a huff about it.

No, it's not okay for people to be offensive and for others to accept it. The logic behind it is that if every time someone said something you don't like, or disagree with, not to take it so personal. If a person did, you would fight and argue with the rude teller at the bank, the driver that cut you off in traffic, the woman who bumped into you and didn't say excuse me, and so on.

Meaning, you will come in contact with situations and people that may not behave or say stuff that you agree with. You can't get upset all the time. If we all reacted to every situation, we would all be in jail. I just have too many things going on in my life to feel some type of way about a strangers opinion.

When this happens, I say my peace and ignore the poster. You have every right to feel the way you feel.

I too did online classes for a few prerequisites. It was a life saver. I still had to go in for the exams and final.

Generalize much? I went to an online school for my MSN- and didn't cheat once. I don't think my school was "crappy" either. The school experience depends a great deal on what people make of it.

OP, I would definitely take this up the chain of command if you aren't granted the points. I also think you were lucky that you were able to review with the actual scantron sheet- my program never allowed that but only the paper copy of the questions, which wasn't allowed to leave the room.

If this happened at my school I would be furious. My class of nursing students happened to take grades and quality of teachers very seriously, we spoke our minds when something wasn't right, and you should too. Advocate for yourself so you can have the strength to advocate for your patients in the future. Like everyone else said, get it in writing and go to a higher up. Be Profesional and you will gain respect, when these issues or others like them come up again you will be prepared.

Hi, I'm an APN and a former nursing instructor. If what you're saying is true, then I feel badly that a "technical" problem resulted in you receiving an incorrect failing grade on your exam, and even worse about the comments from your instructor/professor. If you don't get a fair resolution to this issue (an opportunity to have your exam hand scored would be the best way) then I would certainly take your complaint to the supervisor/dean at your school. Request a meeting with the Dean and your professor and put your complaint in writing.

I am very familiar with the problems of the Scantron machine, which was why I always went back and double-checked my students' answers against what the machine picked up. There were errors over the years and I would have never failed a student because of not coloring in those little circles dark enough. In my opinion, that is not the best way for your professor/instructor to conduct his/herself. There's always the potential for errors when technology is used and I feel that all exams should be double checked for these problems. Best of luck to you!

Was that you?! I knew it!!!

I took an online class and my final grade was an F! I made an A but because there was some confusion with my name, she thought I never participated in class. I emailed her and she was being shady about changing my grade. I emailed her and the head of the department everyday until I received what I deserved! Be persistent and get what is rightfully yours! Good luck!

WOW! I thought some of my instructors were pretty harsh! I think this is a COMPLETE abuse of her position. I would be taking this up with the Dean of Nursing if I were you. Some might think that action is too much, but honestly, this is pettiness that needs to be stamped out. I hope for the best for you!!!

I would appeal the grade on the basis of machine malfunction. If they won't accept that test, then I'd ask to retake the test.

I did my entire ADN program online and most of my prerequisites because that's what worked best for me, my family, and my work schedule. I didn't "copy" from my friend. I worked my orifice off because I didn't have an instructor in front of me to ask questions to. When I took my NCLEX I was scared as anyone is but especially so because doing everything online you can never really know how you compare to the traditional student. I walked out of my test in 40 minutes with no doubt in the world I had passed. I thought I cant believe I did all that work for this measley test it was so easy. I think it took longer to do the little questionnaire at the end. I've been a nurse 3 years now in ICU. My first 7 months of nursing I was not only promoted to charge nurse but also earned a Daisy award, a national award for excellence in nursing. Many of the "traditional" students that began their program at the same time as myself, did not complete the program on schedule, didn't complete it at all, or failed their boards multiple times. If you are serious about nursing and online courses works for you than go for it. You control your learning. Now I'm completing my RN-MSN and how wonderful it's been never having to step foot inside of a nursing classroom.
