Stealing drugs!! what's your opinion?????

Nurses General Nursing

I was just talking to a woman I work with about this today. But it seems like we are always hearing about nurses that are stealing narcotics from hospitals or other facilities. It has happened twice this year at a hospital where I work which is a pretty good size hospital with a level 3 trauma center. Anyhow my question is with as controlled and counted as these drugs stay, how on earth can anyone possibly think they "might" get away with this?!?!? I mean, I understand some people get really desperate but that is just asking to have your nursing license taken away. What's your thought on the subject????

For Rhon and others who want to educate yourself about substance abuse in nursing, check out AANA.com -it's the CRNA's association website - click on peer assistance. For the nurse who stole for her husband, its co-dependence at its worst. She needs a lawyer and her SNA to help her get the treatment she needs and help her get back into nursing. Since she's not the one using the drugs, her prognosis is good.

THE THING IS RHON

I NEVER STOLE A THING. I AM WORKING IN NURSING AND I DON'T NEED TREATMENT. MY HUSBAND DOESN'T EVEN TAKE ASPRIN. HE WORKS EVERY DAY AND IS DRUG TESTED REGULARLY. NIETHER OF US HAVE EVER ABUSED DRUGS.

I HAVE AN EXCELLANT LAWYER. THE BOARD HAS NOT EVEN OFFERED ME A HEARING BECAUSE THEY KNOW THEY DON'T HAVE A CASE. THEY JUST TELL ME THE INVESTIGATION IS CONTINUING.

AND AS FAR AS MY PROGNOSIS? I DON'T HAVE AN ILLNESS THEREFORE I DON'T NEED A GOOD PROGNOSIS.

i am so sorry i asked, you know what i did not know it was a english class, and perfection was needed to find out other people's opinions what you said was mean and hateful, seems to me if you can judge me for my handwriting, which is not perfect especially since i just had carpal tunnel release two days ago, i thought i was doing good, but you shot me down, all i wanted was an honest opinion on a subject if you do not like my typing do not READ IT. SOME NURSE YOU ARE:angryfire

Sorry. Perhaps that was rude of us. But she said it in a nice way. Didn't mean to upset you that way.

(p.s. All caps, like you guys are doing is cybertalk for yelling and screaming and can be considered rude. LOL)

I resent having to miss holidays and vacations with my 3 children and husband because some druggie got caught and decided to rehab in order to maintain their license, and I have to cover their shifts, I didn't see the term martyr on my job description.

Do you resent all sick co-workers, or only the ones who have something wrong with them that you don't like?

Hang in there 30 yr RN....the burden of proof is on the BON to prove you diverted. You have a good lawyer so you will do OK. I bet if someone went through all our ICU MARS we would find many times the dose doesn't perfectly add up to that 10 mg of MS...because my unit is not perfect with recording either. Maybe this will catch up with some of us eventually too...but it doesn't mean someone is diverting automatically. Critical care areas probably have more problems with this kind of thing than other units. We DO give a lot of titrating doses of MS....

Hope everything goes well for you and this is expunged from your record.

if they seek help before they get busted i will have sympathy for them

once they are busted and they say they are sick and want rehab as a way to get out of trouble and maintain their license, then i have no sympathy whatsoever

tom,

i don't want, nor do i need your sympathy, tyvm. i doubt anyone who really wants help does.

rehab is not my way out of trouble...it is my road to life!!!

i am sure there are nurses out there that may ask for rehab just to get out of trouble...but they won't last long. lumping us all in one group is not fair. some of us really do want help...not your sympathy.
