New Grad...need advice
Hey guys, thanks for the advice. I will most definately be getting my ACLS, PALS, and TNCC among with as many others that i can do. One thing i did forget to mention is that ive been a CNA for 5 yrs now so im not totally brand new to all this. I know its not the same but i do have some assessment skills i am carrying over. I do understand what you are saying about floating to another floor and i have thought about that or getting another type of call in position. Thank you for your opinions :)

New Grad...need advice
I just passed my NCLEX-PN last month , with plans to finish my RN. The thing is i have been working in the ER this past year as secretary, and my entire ER gang wants to keep me :wink2: . I love them so much and im really excited bc they dont hire LPN's in this position. so i feel really honered and know they wouldn't have given it to if they felt like they couldn't do the job. I'm doing ok so far (they say im doing great, but i still dont have the comfy feeling) :chair: . I was just wondering if anyone had any advice to help me as im starting out in such an adavanced position. I would really appreciate it. ___________________________________________

best advice you can give student nurse
I'm in nursing school right now myself, and one of our sayings is....... EAT AN ELEPHANT ONE BITE AT A TIME. One of the students from a couple of years back was doing homework and getting stressed. Her younger son (between the ages of 5-7 i think) came up and said that too her, and its so true!! ________________________________________________ Dont pray for your mountains to be moved, but for the courage to climb them.

Scrubs
Depends totally on where you work. Some places just give you certain colors and couple of designs to choose from and others let you wear whatever. My advice is just wait till you find somewhere to work because you never know. Its fun to have one that you fell in love with the design so you could wear it in a situation you didnt have to have a particular color on.

I thought the LPN program was under a year??
I actually just started an LPN program a couple of weeks ago. My program is just one year Oct- Oct. But rules are starting to change and they are trying to take it back to 15-18 months. It just depends on the area you are in. You don't get paid it is considered schooling/training. The total cost of my program is about $4500. But thats where I am in Tennessee there are rules that differ in different parts of the US ________________________________ Let us not pray for our mountains to be moved, but yet for the courage to climb them!

non-clinical nursing???
TO be honest with you, there are a few jobs out there i guess that have mostly paper work but aren't well open right now. But if you think of going to a head nursing job or a teaching job it really won't be too great considering you wouldn't know what your employees or students are doing. Ofcourse it's not the most wonderful job out there, but you really need the clinical experience just to have it and know what its about, because you will never know otherwise.

Npo
Same thing at my hospital, NPO is without meds, and if they are to have meds it must be written..."NPO except meds"

Why LPN??
I have been a CNA for 4 yrs now and have been trying to get my RN pre reqs done and bc of stress and financial reasons i just cant take off work for that long so LPN works alot better and honestly i am happier about doing it first bc it will give me the knowledge and better understanding when i am going for my RN, I dont understand how anyone could think that LPN's aren't worth as much as RN's CNA's, Doctors, etc...they are just as much of the team as any of the rest of them

Nurses, do you routinely do beds and baths?
I'm a CNA and where I work I am responsible for ADL activities....including baths, linen, vitals, Blood sugars, feeding, turning, and changing incontinent patients. Our ratios are obviously a lot better than where you work. We have 1 nurse to 4-6 patients on first shift and 1 CNA for 10-15 patients. Although this weekend I had 23(EEK) Anyhow the nurses usully have time to help me out a little which is fine when I need it. But I work with some wonderful nurses who just jump in and do it before I get a chance. But then there is the extreme that call me out of a bath to take ice water to someones room. (A little extreme) Anyhow I think it all depends on management and if they are giving you that much of a load they need to rethink the hiring of new staff.
