How does your unit handle new graduates?
13 new grads since May, most failed their boards and are working as aids til they try again, a few of them are okay, most have an attitude, feel that "with the nursing shortage" any behavior is acceptable (poor work ethic, unprofessionalism, carelessness) because the hospital is desperate. If their preceptor expects accountability, they run crying to administration (and return with their tail between their legs) All in all, a bunch of losers, we'd rather work short. Honestly, they are already complaining about having to work Christmas, checking to see who worked last year, feeling entitled to special privileges.

New grad dealing with angry/yelling patients
The nut job was back today, he tried to get me to accept a donation for the March of Dimes. I told him the hosp. fund raiser was over but I'm sure that he could independently donate on his own. Today he was wearing a headband that was really the waist band he cut off a pair of white Fruit of the Loom briefs (well, techically the undies were once white) like a demented and aged Rambo.Actually, he behaved alright today, just really obnoxious.

New grad dealing with angry/yelling patients
The whole incident was kept quiet as it would have been the headline in the local newspaper police report. I agree that something be done to protect the workers exposed to this wack-o.

New grad dealing with angry/yelling patients
Yesterday at the risk mgt. mtg. (with the CEO, etc.) psycho old man family memeber of pt. busted his way in, tried to cane an administrator and threatened to kill everyone. They had to call a Dr. Strong. Yep, his wife will still be on my med-surg floor as a pt. this weekend, and yes, they still allowed him to come in for a visit that very afternoon. Wonder which color scrub set co-ordinates best with body armor?

Obesity in the hospital
Some of my most rewarding nursing experiences have been with bariatric pts. Some will take their hospital admission (usually a problem that is secondary to their obesity) as an opportunity to make real changes in their lifestyles, are highly motivated and succeed. Others are just miserable.

Students Drawing Blood/Inserting IVS in MD?
It was left to the instructor to decide in my NY school, occasionally she'd let a seasoned lpn or paramedic.

Anybody else work with a "super nurse?"
Same thing at my hosp. super nurse is the one who takes the easiest assignments (the one's who are being D/c'd and the ALOC's,taking one more pt. than the rest of the staff so she won't get an admit) sits around all day and hides out in an empty room,(so she won't have to help-out of sight/out of mind) but when the md or super is around, she whips into action, pointing out all the wonderful things she had done this shift,as in how superior her care was, how her patients are miraculously recovering under her eye.

unacceptable abbreviations - compliance problems
I am more concerned over MD writing order that is illegible and vague, requires 3 nurses and ward clerk to decipher, then a follow up phone call verify and clarify. MD gets annoyed, we say "if we could read your orders....." Next day, same old, same old.

Disgusting! Stealing from a nursing home resident...
I was a manager in LTC years ago, one Christmas we all adopted residents and bought them gifts. Well, on Christmas Eve, someone went through them all, unwrapped them, took what they liked (almost everything, blankets, clothing, real nice gifts) on Christmas morning we discovered the theft, and scrambled to replace the missing gifts, which was difficult with only the mini-mart open. Never found the thieves.

New LPN having trouble c CNA'S!!! HELP!!!
I agree that the CNA's resent you because you have taken the initiative to get your LPN license. They are jealous, I would be concerned they might be vicious enough to set you up. I would leave the facility (or at least that unit) This type of behavior occurs also when the LPN becomes an Rn, etc. Watch your back and CYA.

scrubs/capri
Our newly rvised dress code allows capris, but I haven't seen anyone wear them yet. Plus what do you do about hosiery, we're required to wear white socks or hose. It seems like it would look dorky in anycolor capris xcept white.
