  1. Hey....your right by me! I'm in good ol' Effingham! It's been awhile since i've check up on these "where you from" threads. Those of you who work in springfield may know my boyfriend....he did his residency 3 yrs ago at St. Johns....may even know his crazy ex wife who is usually in and out of the hospital there!
  2. I live in Illinois. No,as an LPN you can NOT hang TPN or do anything with a central line, picc line, etc. Unless you want to keep your license, you let an RN do it. Now, we can PRIME the TPN for the RN, to help her out, but absolutely we can not hang it
  3. Have to say, a pharmacist on the floor would be great. It stinks to have pharmacy leave at 9pm and they miss your msg about needing medicine, so then an Rn has to go to the "night room" on peds and get it out of the pyxis(which carries other drugs the usual floor pyxis doesn't) up there. We don't have a nurse that's called the admision/discharge nurse, but bascially the floating nurse(which 2 of them work 11-7p) helps the charge nurse with it. Day shift always utilizes the float nurse for admissions, if they aren't dealing with outpatient blood transfusions. They sometimes, if has time, will write out ur discharge orders, but usually the nurse then gives the discharge papers to the patient after reviewing what the float nurse wrote. If no one is scheduled from 11-7 or one of the 3-11 nurses doesn't float, then the charge nurse does all the admissions, and on 3-11 we're responsible to do the discharge instructions unless someone else offers to do it for us.
  4. Alichael, I have known someone close to me go thru gastric bypass. It is my "second mom"(what my best friend and i call each other's moms). She had tried dieting, exercising, and just couldn't get the weight off. Also, was causing achig in her knees. Worked out well when she had it done, because her daughter was getting married that next yr. She had it done about 2 yrs ago, and is doing fairly well. However, right after surgery she was miserable with the NG tube down her, and in severe pain(but i think nina just has poor pain tolerance anyway) Her only set back has been scar tissue causing intestinal blockage a few months later, so she had that fixed. She's lost a total of 100 some pounds. She'd been about 200 some pounds. I wish you luck with your decision!
  5. Bupivicaine is what we use in our epidural pumps as well.
  6. Anesthsia ok'd this?
  7. That's nice of you to take in a classmate! My best friend's mom lived in New Orleans(well, Burus) and is in the nursing program. She only had time to apparently grab her computer(so she could continue her schooling) and some clothes. Had to convince her parents to leave with her, since they stuck it out all the times before, including the hurricane in '65.They were able to make it to Alabama ok. I spoke to her son Kenny recently on the phone for a short time(i think last friday), and he said she was gonna go back and see if anything was left of the home, but of course, had to get there by boat. She's mostly upset over the fact....no baby pics of her 2 sons anymore.
  8. In IL, we can't hang IV's with more than 40 meq of KCL, IV pushes(other than flushes), TPN, blood, or anything thru a central line, PICC or port, no heparin drips. There's a few other things we can't do, but none of it's pertinent to my floor really.
  9. Ya, calling in is a smart idea if ur feeling that horrible, except it could look bad on ur yearly evaluation(depending how ur facility deals with this).
  10. i use a clipboard as well.
