STCC anyone?

Published

Hi, I was just wondering if there were any other students (or alumni or instructors) from Springfield Technical Community College on here.

ok, that's what I thought. So does that mean that the other 2 hour slot is actually a lab at school?

hi! booklmb again. Important words to remember. As a 1989 STCC nsg program graduate, and having completed the entire nsg program in 24 months ( YES the ENTIRE PROGRAM)!!!. I feel that I can offer some help.

First: ORGANIZE your class and study time in the most effective manner possible.

Second: FOCUS-FOCUS_FOCUS!!!!!

Third: Don't let ANYTHING slow you down or stop you from reaching your goal!

Four: Remind yourself daily- IT WILL ALL BE WORTH IT WHEN YOU SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE YOUR STUDIES AND GRADUATE WITH YOUR CLASS!!!

Fifth: Be supportive of each other. Stay positive, even when times seem tough.

YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hi! my name is becky and i am currently at stcc as well. i am still doing my pre-reqs to get into the nursing program. i wa wondering about the hesi exam you have to take before you apply for the program. was it hard?? i am taking mine in a week or so and am freaking out about the anatomy part cause i only had A&P 1 so far. any advice on it would be great. hopefully i get in to the program next fall!

I am starting the STCC nursing program well in about a week. For me personally, I took the HESI before even starting A&P. I was nervous about it and figured I would take it to see what it was like so when I was ready I could take it again. Someone recommended brushing up on my latin roots to help with the anatomy terms, so that was all I did. It was very helpful in figuring out what words meant in the A&P section. I ended up getting an 88 so I didn't have to go back - thank goodness!

Hello.

I'll answer more by echoing what was said to me when I asked these questions two years ago to the school. (I'm a senior finishing up at STCC)

The admission process is centered around grades in all your previous ("pre-reqs") classes. I went in applying with what they said was about 900 other applicants and made it in with about 100 others. I also had nothing worse than an A- (3.86GPA to be exact) in anything I took and had ALL the classes they wanted to see done by graduation done.

I seem to remember the HESI score being mentioned as a second means of admission regarding grades, but I would ask someone at the school to be sure.

Also, I think I found out about acceptance around early April, maybe mid april, but things may have changed as well.

There's certainly a good reason so many apply -- it's no secret it's the best program you could be part of. The lectures and clinicals are jam packed with learning and the professors all around are a giant wealth of knowledge backed by years of experience; all there to make you the best nurse you can possibly be when you graduate.

Good luck!

1. Should I consider taking the HESI exam again? Do they take the better one of the two scores or just the last test score I took. When reviewing applicants do they look at the Hesi scores first and take the top scorers and weed out from that. It says I need a 77% to pass which I did. But would it be beneficial to try and study up on Bio and A & P and retake for a better shot.

2. Is there really 600 applicants?? and only like 60-100 spots for the program. Please tell me I am wrong. If that the case there is no way I am getting in for the fall.

3. How long till you find out if you get accepted?

I believe nearly 1000 people applied to the nursing program at STCC this past year for the 94 slots they had available. They notified us in April of the admissions decisions. I know that I personally have a 4.0 and had all of the non-nursing classes completed when I was accepted -except for A&P2 which I finished in May. As far as the HESI goes it was used, as I understand, as secondary criteria after grades as was the med calc class grade that is required before you can apply.

HI All

I am new to this site.

I have some questions about STCC. Hopefully some of you can help!!

I am really interested in their nursing program and I am in the process of getting everything together by thier deadline of March 1st. I am taking medication calculations now online. Just took the midterm last night and got a 93%. So I am super thrilled about that. I am also taking Eng Comp I online. I got an A in A & P I and General Psych I got a B. I just took the HESI today and got an 80%. Yes, I passed, but barely. I did really well on the math, vocab, grammar and reading comprehension, scored in the 90's for all of that. A & P I got a 72% :( I was not happy. I took A & P I in 2005. Biology is where I did horrible. I got a 56%. I was not expecting such a hard A & P and biology questions.

My questions are:

1. Should I consider taking the HESI exam again? Do they take the better one of the two scores or just the last test score I took. When reviewing applicants do they look at the Hesi scores first and take the top scorers and weed out from that. It says I need a 77% to pass which I did. I know I have more question but I am drawing a blank right now.

Anything anyone can tell me about the STCC nursing program would be very helpful.

Thanks

Angela

If I were you I would take the HESI again after brushing up on the science portion again, they will take your higher of the two scores. I would also introduce yourself to the Dean and get your name out there. Your grades sound pretty good so far, so even though there are only 100 spots, if you keep doing well you have a shot. Get your sciences done and score high, that will go a long way. Good luck! But as the Dean always says "don't put all your eggs in one basket" Apply to a couple other area schools as back up. AIC is much easier to get into, for example.

Question for you ladies. I am looking at the nursing schedule for the first semester to just get an idea of what I am looking at for a possible schedule for when I do get in. I understand the thur and friday class from 10 to noon and then the lab classes on mon and tue from 7 to 12 and 8 to 12. I also see the nursing freshmen seminar but what is the 2 hour classes for on wed or thursdays? It says Lab so is it just an additional lab class you need to go along with the one's on mon and tue?

Mon/tues is your clinical at the outside agency - the other 2 hr is your on-campus lab:wink2:

Does everyone that's starting on the 2nd have everything? I'm going to get my ID/library code on Wed or Thurs and drop off my last TB test oh and my CPR card. And then I'll be done with everything we had to do before we start.

Did you get all the recommended reading done?

I read the readings that were assigned for the first week of classes. I thought it was similar to the info we were "supposed" to have learned in Human Growth. I thought it was kind of weird skipping around in the book like that, the first chapter was about the history of nursing, which I personnally do not know much about. Did anyone else do the assignments in the study guide? I read all the chapter over the past week and then I went to the study guide - which was probably a mistake - because the questions were pretty chapter specific and I was unsure on many of them.

I still need to buy a lab coat. I hear that they are over $50. It is a shame because I bought a lab coat for Micro there last year and it is one of the high end ones that was selling for $50 - it has the STCC emblem on it but it doesn't have "nursing" on it. I don't know anyone in the program to know if that is ok.

Also a couple of questions I still have that somebody might know the answers to

-Do we need to wear the uniform the first day?

-Bring any of the books the first day?

I am not usually a nervous person but I am getting very anxious! My 2 year old is going to day care (with a trusting neighbor) for the first time and my older son will be at his first week of school. I just don't know what to expect, which I am sure will get better after a week of two. I certainly hope that we don't have to lug all of those books to class every day that is for sure.

The only book I have left to pick up is the APA format book and pay the $123 deposit for the kit.

I hope to meet some new friends and study partners in the program too!

Good luck everyone. I am so glad that I just found this site with other STCC students.

Is this the best place to chat? I wish blackboard or STCC had a place we could join and be able to talk to each other - maybe they do?????

We only have to wear the scrubs/uniforms to clincal and we don't have to bring our books the first day either. I still have to get another set of scrubs, my lab coat, and the kit! I can't believe it's $123! Does anyone know what's in it?

I'm actually not nervous at all, just really excited, I wish it was this week!!

Well said...well said. LoL.

Has anyone gone to the STCC bookstore and seen the textbook by

Townsend, M.T. - "Essentials of psychiatric mental health nursing: concepts of care in evidence based practice"? I went today and did not see it, nor did I see it on the list of books that were "required" from what the bookstore had available. The gentleman that I asked simply replied, check next week. But if it's not going to be in due to error on their part, I might as well order it now online.

I bought all my books online through Barnes and Noble, used my member card (cost $25) and my friend bought her books through the book store. I spent $300 less then her!!! Granted her work is paying for it but if you are paying for your books I highly recommend ordering them!

I agree those chapters are human growth all over again. I just skimmed them for things I hadn't already learned...

Hey Everyone,Just an FYI; I went to the bookstore this morning and they have the scrubs and lab coats in. The shirts are $26 and the pants are $19. The coat is $34.
