STCC anyone?

Published

Hi, I was just wondering if there were any other students (or alumni or instructors) from Springfield Technical Community College on here.

LoL. We all have those moments, don't worry about it. But the first couple weeks, no there isn't any clinical. It takes them a while to organize what facilities we will be at in the fall. For us, we didn't start till the last week of Sept. I believe. As for lab...I want to say we started the second week. And, I guess for Trends, it was possible that it was only 7 weeks. It didn't seem like we went over a whole lot of material and for the first couple weeks we didn't really meet.

Anyways, it's good that you're doing everything early now so you know nothing backs you up later when September comes around. If you are in the middle of your series of vaccinations, they told us that would be fine so long as you keep up documentation that you've been taken them.

We just don't have clinical this week due to a planned convention we have to go to this week, it counts as clinical. And the other week Tero was referring to is just one day off, patriots day. Every now and again, the schedule changes but they will give you the entire schedule of the semester the first day of nursing school in September. Don't worry so much! There is a shock factor associated when you see everything that you will do in the semester. But it's doable, just take one day at a time.

The clinical experience can really vary with whatever professor you will be assigned. But basically you will do personal care, do a bunch of nursing assessments on your patients, pass a few meds, and do a few injections. There is paperwork with clinical that you will need to turn into your clinical professor every week too.

I hope I didn't overwhelm you with all the information! I've been trying to avoid that! LoL.

I love all this great info! Please keep it coming, And I totally needed to hear that it is doable!

What hospitals do they use for clnicals??

I am getting ready to leave but to answer one of your questions...the first semester you will be in a nursing home second semester they use Holyoke Hospital, Mercy, and Baystate.

Just got accepted to STCC, but I think I'm more scared than happy....waa. I finished my prereqs and Hesi. Does anyone know when we will be getting our orientation letter?

Congrats STCC14! Hopefully we get the letters soon.

I hear ys, I go from scared and nervous to excited then back to scared. It's an emotional roller coaster I tell you.

I was just at the JCPEnney store in the Eastfield Mall and they have the most amazingly cute scrubs! I can't wait to start buying them. They were inexpensive too, I think a scrub top and the pants came as a set for like $12.99, dont quote me on the price but it was still a deal.

So that leads me to the next question, Uniforms or dress code what should we expect? Can we wear whatever to class but at clinicals we wear scrubs. Do we buy them from STCC or on our own?

For clinical and simulation, you will have to wear STCC's scrubs. They will inform you of everything at orientation.

Proudtwinmom, as tempting as it is DO NOT BUY SCRUBS! Haha. I know they are adorable and you are excited, but you will be most likely wasting money. We have specific uniforms that we must purchase through STCC-- that means you won't be needing scrubs for at least 2 years. And you must consider that most floors/sections in different hospitals may require you to wear certain colors, or they may also provide you with the scrubs you need to wear-- for uniformity, and for safety (anyone can walk onto a floor wearing scrubs and blend right in and steal medications.. information.. babies??). So as tempting as it is, save your money for now (:

Do any of you current students have any opinions on rolling backpacks? I see a lot of people on this forum suggest them, despite their hideousness. Should I get one, or am I going to be laughed at? Haha. Do you have to bring a large amount of books on any given day that would precipitate the need for a rolling backpack?

You won't need to bring your books for lectures. But some people do to read/study before or after class. However, you will need to bring a few books for clinical to do your paperwork. I personally don't think anything is wrong with the rolling backpack, but I don't have one.

Good luck tomorrow everyone!!! We are so close to being DONE with our first year! :hpygrp: I'm looking forward to doing a lot of :onbch: and of course a celebratory :beercuphe

sorry i love these silly smiley faces!

Congrats (: Can't wait to be in your shoes.. !

Is there anyone out there IN the STCC program now? I would really love to know if you like it. How hard it is. Does anyone on this forum have young kids and is in the program?

I will be beginning the nurses program in the fall. I have spoke with a number of students re: the STCC nursing program. I have been told as each semester approaches it gets more intense. It is not recommended working a full time job, and having a small family is just that. I have to work as I go to school because I have obligations that need to be met so I have no choice. I will be working 32 hours a week. Every spare second I have will be in a book. You have to do what you have to do. I am not 20 years old and living with mom, but I wish I was! Just recieved notice the grant went through and we will all be getting smartphones! EXCELLENT! Also, if i understand it right, the classes will be put off till the following week. Did anyone see this? Is that what you got out of it to?
