Hi, I was just wondering if there were any other students (or alumni or instructors) from Springfield Technical Community College on here.
Congrats to you too Bananimal! I was taking a nap on saturday, kids were with the grandparents. The hubby was around the house. He got the mail and put it on the counter. Never said a word to me about the packet. He knows too that I am waiting. I really wasn't expecting it so soon. From what I was told, they usually come in late April to early may. So I woke up about 6 pm, checked email and wandered in to the kitchen and saw it. I snatched it up and opened it. I kinda knew I was in because it had a clear window and I saw the words congratulations. I yelled at my husband for not waking me up to tell me I got something in the mail from STCC.
Any one have any info on financial aid or student loans, grants or scholarships. That kinda thing. Also what is the average cost a semester. Do you buy books just once or is it new books every semester?
To answer the question about the books, since I'm on. Is that you will buy a bunch of books this semester and then use them for the upcoming semesters. But you will still buy one or two books as you go along. When presented the list....I kinda was in a state of shock. They stated the price of all the books when we first met was about $800.
I didn't go this route, but wish I did....but apparently the best way to save is to get your books through Barnes and Noble with their membership card. I don't know about everyone else, but I think I'd die without my PDA! I have some of the books on it that comes in handy for clinical. The drug guide, tabers, nursing diagnosis, and Mosby's lab reference guide are on my PDA and computer. When doing paperwork, I feel like it saves a lot of time and stress. Just something to keep in mind if you already have one.
Hello! I think nursing10 and I both have a palm that is also a phone. I never had a pda before and figured it would be useful and boy am I glad I got it! If I need to look up a med, I can just type the name of the drug either generic or trade and all the info pops up. I will say that I just upgraded to a apple Ipod touch because it has so much more information than a cell...plus I can put music/voice on it, so if I am on break or whatever I can pop in the headphones and listen to audio lectures or music if I wanted. The downside is that it is not a cell phone, the upside is it has wifi, so on stcc campus you have the internet at your fingertips! If you have any other pda questions (or any question) feel free to PM...I so wish I knew someone in the program last year!
BTW, you guys are lucky, they sent out the letters early!
Congrats to everyone that was accepted!
I'm completely for anyone getting an PDA for nursing school, but it is added cost. I had to get a new phone anyways as I got my previous cell wet at the beach a month before school started. LoL. If your cellphone provider doesn't provide you with a good deal on one for whatever reason, you might look into getting one on ebay. I did this, and found an unlocked one. Basically this means that you should be able to pop in your SIM card and it will work despite the provider.
I have the Palm Treo 680. I enjoy little things, like having a stylus with a Palm. I'm easily amused I guess. But with mine, it also allows me to put music/voice on it. Though recording lectures isn't allowed, so the voice feature isn't of any use. If you look into getting a "smart phone" as they call it. You have to look for something that runs on WindowsMobile or PalmOS I believe, otherwise you won't be able to put software on it. Like some books that would be handy for clinical.
I don't do this but several people in our class actually record themselves dictating the lecture and listen to it in their free time. I should have mentioned what I was talking about when i said voice recording..cause like you said we can not record the lecture...I listen to the audio recordings found online from our medsurg book sometimes. This type if stuff is only useful if you learn from listening though!
I am very close to Mass border in Windsor, CT
Hmmmm.. have heard about the PDA's being very useful for nursing. I recently got a blackberry, not sure yet if it has the same capabilities. I need to research further as I am not clear yet on how a PDA works. I was thinking about getting an IPOD touch, I just really might now after hearing how helpful they are. I am actually in a drawing at work for one. I really hope I win now. lol
I am still so excited about this, just hoping I can manage it with work, kids and house. I have wed and fridays off now and I am saving all my vacation time until the fall, which I have 187 hours to use. So I am hoping to only have to work about 2.5days a week. I will know more when I see the fall schedule that is posted. I see they have 3rd semester nursing students posted already.

I got my acceptance letter Saturday (: (: !! I kept double checking to make sure it was, in fact, MY NAME on the letter, that no, they did not screw up-- haha. I am counting down the days to September 1st-- so very excited! All the info I'm finding on this thread is so helpful. Thanks everyone!
Congrats ProudTwinMom on your acceptance as well! I wish you the best of luck in the program.
