Starting Salaries For New Grads

Just wondering how the starting salaries compare for new grads around the countries....if you know what yours are, could you post them please? I am thinking of relocating and am wondering if I can afford it ....also let me know what the cost of living is like in your area....

I am in Southern CT and the salaries are as follows

NEW GRAD BASE RATE = $22-24/hr

SIGN ON BONUS = $6,000-$10,000

DIFFERENTIAL = Eves $2-$3

Night $3-$4.85

W/E $2-$4.50

Retention Bonuses = approximately $5000./year

49K a year working nights and weekends is feasible. I originally misread the post but hopefully caught it in time before my first answer was seen. In the Baltimore area, day time salaries run $20-22 an hour, so that comes roughly 37K-46K a year for day times. Add in shift differentials and weekends and it could easily go to 49K. Hopkins, btw is not known for particularly high nursing salaries. Most hospitals in the area are pretty competitive.

I'm from Wisconsin. I'll be starting at 20.25 plus 2.00 for second shift and another two dollars for weekends. So weekdays I'll make 22.25 and weekends I'll make 24.25

Reguarding salary in Myrtle Beach.

The south historically pays lower than other areas of the country, At my hospital starting grad pay,if I have been told correctly is 19.50/hr. 3.00 differential for nights,4.00 differential for weekends. This is the hospital 2 bloccks from the beach. There are several others a little further inland, but the rate is less. I do know that my hospital pays3500. for relocation assist, but they have recently done away with the sign on bonus.

The pay may be less, but I love the lifestyle here.

Norwalk Hospital

is the one with the great bonuses 11.5% per year retention bonus....sign on bonus is $6000 for days, $7500 eves, $10,000 nights....they only pay 22.09 base for new grads....

diffs are:

eve $3

night $4

w/e $3

Stamford Hospital

is paying the $24/hr with an $8000 sign on bonus....no retention bonus...their differentials are

12% Eve

20% Nights

$2 W/E

Hi all,

My name is Nicky and I just recently joined this board and I'm going to be starting my prerequisites at the end of this month. The nursing program I applied to has a work program were if you agree to work for one of their hospitals for two years they will pay for the nursing program and your prerequisites. In New Jersey our graduates start at around $25/hr for days but unfortunately, I have no idea about differentials for nights and weekends.

One interesting thing I noticed about John Hopkins in Baltimore Maryland is that while their rates may not be as high as the surrounding hospitals in that area, they are one of the few I've seen that pays 100% tuition for their nurses and if you have dependents that are college aged, they will pay 50% of their tuition yearly at an accredited college (maximum of 50% of $26,000) and if your spouse happens to work there as well, then they would also get 50% for the same child. Not bad if you have to put a few kids through school. I'm hoping to relocate from New Jersey once I've finished my 2 year agreement and Maryland may be one of my choices, plus they also offer relocation assistance!

Xantha,

I will be moving to Nothern Ct in 2 years. I am starting nursing school in the fall. My husband is in the Marine Corps and will be retiring in 2 years, then we will move. I am originally from CT. I miss it so much. I currently live in North Carolina and hate it.

My brother went to school at Holyoke. You probably live right near my home town. I'll be looking for a job in CT. Did you check out any other hospitals other than Hartford?

Specializes in Gerontological, cardiac, med-surg, peds.

WOW, most of you new grads are starting off making more money than I make as an ADN nursing instructor.

Trish,

Yes I loooked at St Francis(Hartford),Ct Childrens(Hartford), Johnson Memorial in Stafford, ECHN (Rockville & Manchester) as well as Baystate and Mercy(where I work now).

Hartford and Ct Childrens are affiliated and offer the same things. St francis' base pay was higher but diffs were less as was tuition reimbursement. ECHN said you could only go into Med-Surg and when I talked to them I was looking for L&D. Johnson Memorial's pay was way below the rest. I didn't go to MA because CT has GN status and MA does not.

The other issue was nurse to patient ratios on nights. Pedi (Ct Childrens) had the best, the unit I applied to in Hartford was the next best (7-8). I checked this out with someone besides the manager.

PM me if you want some more specifics.

Where are you originally from? (PM me for privacy) You don't have to answer, just curious. I went to ma for school because Capitol in Hartford is lottery only. I got into STCC and HCC but I really liked HCC, the campus is great, they just built this awesome gym that students can use for free and they didn't lose half my paperwork and make me resend it to apply!!!

In Pittsburgh Post-Gazette classified this weekend UPMC list starting salary for new grads at $38,000. That is up $4000 from only two years ago.

Specializes in Hospice specialty.

I'm not aware of the start salary here in texas, however, I urge everyone when they are seeking employment to look at 401K, insurace etc. I read a study in RN magazine. Many new nurses chose the sign on bonuses and didnt really look into the 401K plan their place of employment offerend. Well in the study over a course of several years they ended up losing tens of thousands of dollars compared to the people who chose a better 401K and insurance plan than the sign on bonus.

MY UNCLE BROUGHT THE NEWSPAPER FROM HARRISBURG TO MY MOM'S HOUSE THE OTHER DAY AND SHOWED ME THAT THEY ARE OFFERING $38/HR. THERE. I DON'T KNOW WHAT IT IS HERE (ABOUT 2 HOURS FROM HARRISBURG) BUT I CAN'T WAIT TO GET THROUGH SCHOOL AND GET A JOB!!!! I HAVE BEEN A SAHM FOR 5 YEARS NOW AND SOME EXTRA MONEY WOULD DO ME SOME GOOD! I CAN'T TELL YOU HOW LONG IT HAS BEEN SINCE I ACTUALLY HAD MONEY TO BUY SOMETHING FOR MYSELF! MY KIDS USUALLY GET WHAT THEY WANT OR NEED AND MY WANTS GET PUT ON THE BACK BURNER, BUT WATCH OUT----- I MAY GO A LITTLE CRAZY AT FIRST!

Starting salary for new grads at Children's Medical Center in Dallas is $19.00/hr for days. More for nights and weekends, but I don't know the exact amount.

You can make more at other hospitals in the area. Children's pays less but has a great reputation and very supportive environment, so a lot of nurses want to work there.

The cost of living in Dallas is less than in cities on the East or West Coast, but more than most of the Midwest or the South (excluding Chicago and Atlanta).
