SIGN ON BONUS = $6,000-$10,000

Out of curriosity, I looked it up on Salary.com and compared the median salary they listed for both areas (although the closest I could get to Blaine, WA was Bellingham) to the cost of living index for both areas and found you'd make more actual dollars in Spokane. Median RN salary for Bellingham is $46,704 with a CoL Index of 110.3 (national average = 100), Spokane's median RN salary is $44,265 but the CoL Index is only 97.3 so you'd make a bit over $3500 more per year in theory.
I should have remembered to try that before I asked and a reminder that dollars isn't everything. Just ask the folks in the Bay Area!
I graduated 2 years ago, and base pay in KC was 16.50 I know last year 1 hospital chain went up to 17.50 with 4.00 night/wknd diff. (which was the highest pay for new grad at that time 2002)The cost of living is fairly low in KC, and there are a lot of hospitals including a children's hospital (pay is the worst there), to choose from.
Originally posted by Mel DI spoke to a nurse who works at Johns Hopkins here in Baltimore. She said their new grad salaries are up to $49,500. But I'm not sure how that works out--if there's overtime/weekends factored into that figure. Sounds pretty good to me, though.
Mel, that salary is quite feasible on night shift. Around Philly new grads are starting at $22-25/hr with about $2-3 extra an hour for night shift, plus many places pay a little more on the weekends. I can't wait to have a paycheck!!!

WHERE? I'm curious what facilities are paying those kind of sign on bonuses and retention bonuses. Good for you -- get all the money you can. But in the end, go to the unit where you will get the most support, best orientation, and best staffing that you can. The salaries may entice you ... but the working conditions will most likely determine if you stay or move on. Best of luck.

In the Baltimore area, salaries start around $21 for days. Some hospitals will pay up to $36/hr if you do straight weekend nights.
Shift differentials run around $2.50-$5.00
I have a friend getting a job in Indiana and starting salary is about $16.50. Huge difference in cost of living in those two areas.
