Hi everyone. My name is Lindsay. I am 37 years old and I am married with 3 kids, boy/girl/boy ages 4, 10, 14.
3 years ago I decided I wanted to be a nurse. I began upgrading at my local college and took the required Math, Chemistry, English, Biology courses. It was a lot of work! Anyway, I got an offer a few months ago at a great college and am so excited! I accepted the offer and will be starting school in September.
The thing is, I wish I would have done this right out of high school while I was young. But back then, I wasn't serious about a career. I just wanted to get married and have kids. It wasn't until 3 years ago that I began desiring to go back to school and have my own career. It's just that I'm feeling kind of embarrassed to start at age 37...anyone else start nursing school in their 30's-40's? #justwondering
First time poster here! Everyone's story is making me feel like I have nothing to complain about. I'm 30 y.o. Recently got married with no kids YET. I have a full time job in the human services industry, but finally looking into a change of career. I have been looking into nursing for the past few years. Received my BS in Bio 7 years ago and am looking to take my pre-reqs in Spring of 2018, granted I get into classes at nearby CC's in the surrounding area. I live in Socal/LA so science classes are always impacted plus I'll have low-priority since I already have my degree. My goal is to get into an ABSN or EL-MSN program hopefully somewhere in Socal. But my "hardship" is nothing compared to mostly everyone who has posted. Thanks everyone for sharing! I look forward to sharing my journey and learning of everyone's here as well. Cheers!
I was perusing nursing at 18 after working 3 years with people with disabilities. I ended up getting pregnant the summer before starting nursing school. I decided focusing on raising my child (soon to be children as we married and ended up having a total of 5 kids, although I waited tables at night to make ends meet) was most important to me due to a difficult and lonely childhood. I went back to school when I was 37 (my yougest just started kindergarten) and finished when I was 41. I have been a nurse almost 3 years and it has been the best decision I have ever made. "I had my cake and ate it too." I was able to be primary care taker of my babies, waited until they were in school to go back to school myself, and now have a career that I love and am so proud to be in. I am so much more mature and a better nurse after my life experience. It is never too late (my sister was pushing 50 when she became a nurse) to pursue your dream. I wholeheartedly cheer you on and encourage you to fulfill your dreams. You will never regret this. I promise!
You have such an inspirational story! Thank you so much for the encouragement! I am now in nursing school and I really enjoy it but now there is a strike happening! Hopefully there will be a negotiation soon!

Hi Lindsay, you are not alone! I'm 39 and I am still finishing my prerequisites in order to apply for the nursing program. Remember that age is just numbers! Haha we have to keep our minds fresh and young, and by going back to school it makes me feel a 21 years old. Good luck on your studies!
You are right, age is just a number. lol All the best to you by the way! :)

I will be 3 months away from my 30th birthday when I graduate from my RT program. I plan on completing my last 4 pre-reqs for the concurrent ASN/BSN program offered at my community college. Like you, I wasn't ready for college in my 20s. I wanted to be a wife and mom. I am glad that I am more mentally settled and ready to take on the responsibilities that come with being a nursing student. GOOD LUCK!
I'm 30 and start in January. This is the third time I'm started the process; my husband is AD Air Force and every attempt previously was put off by deployments and relocations. I have kicked myself over the years for not starting sooner, but now I'm feeling like this is the perfect time. We have a 7 and 8 year old so they're more independent now, his schedule is finally predictable, and I had years home with my kids before they started school.
Not only that, but I'm in school this semester for pre-reqs and for the first time, I LOVE what I'm learning. It's not just memorizing to pass a test... I'm so interested in learning to know things! haha. I'm really enjoying school now. Instead of regretting that I didn't do it sooner, I'm just going to focus on doing my best to keep my GPA competitive for further studying, and enjoy the experience!
