Starting nursing school at 37...

Published

Hi everyone. My name is Lindsay. I am 37 years old and I am married with 3 kids, boy/girl/boy ages 4, 10, 14.

3 years ago I decided I wanted to be a nurse. I began upgrading at my local college and took the required Math, Chemistry, English, Biology courses. It was a lot of work! Anyway, I got an offer a few months ago at a great college and am so excited! I accepted the offer and will be starting school in September.

The thing is, I wish I would have done this right out of high school while I was young. But back then, I wasn't serious about a career. I just wanted to get married and have kids. It wasn't until 3 years ago that I began desiring to go back to school and have my own career. It's just that I'm feeling kind of embarrassed to start at age 37...anyone else start nursing school in their 30's-40's? #justwondering

Specializes in EMS, ED, Trauma, CEN, CPEN, TCRN.

I became a paramedic at 31, ADN/RN at 36, BSN at 38, Army nurse at 38, first MSN at 43, second MSN at 44, and finally about to be a mom at 45. Don't worry about your "number"!

Just a tip: when replying to a specific post, hit that "quote" button so we know who you're talking to. :) Best of luck in your nursing program!!!

Congratulations on your decision to become a nurse! I'm taking pre-reqs at 40 and I'll finish my BSN at 42. There are some in my program who are older than me. I say go for it! Follow your dreams!

That is sad that your aunts husband left her. :( Glad she stayed strong and finished nursing school! :)

Thank you for your response and encouraging words! I will do as you suggested. :)

Thank you for letting me know about how I should use the "quote" button!!! :D How embarrassing, you can tell I am new here and not sure how this all works...hehe

Anyway....Congratulations with all of your accomplishments! Wow. You should be proud of yourself. And all the best with the new baby coming! That will definitely be your best reward. :)))

Thank you! And same to you! :D

Hi Lindsay! I just finished my first semester of nursing school and I'm 47! I have 9 children and I was home with them for 20 years. Never think you are too old! You bring so much life experience. I am a much better student because I am older. I know that I don't want to waste time so I am serious about my studies and I manage my time much better. Good luck!

I'm in a class of ~46 students. Most of the class is young (early to mid-twenties) but there are at least 10 of us in our late 20s, 30s, 40s, and 50s. It's definitely not uncommon nowadays to have more than a few "non-traditional students" in nursing school.

I would guess that a third of my classmates in nursing school were in at least their 30's.

9 children?! You sound like an amazing, selfless mother. To wait until you raised them up before going to school yourself. Thank you for sharing!! :)))

I'm getting a few pre-reqs out of the way at the age of 43. I'll be able to apply when I am 44. Not ideal, but like you I've been raising kids as well as operating a small business. I'm very excited to be on this path though. Good luck to you!

I am 52 and just started my pre reqs for my ADN. I know that I want to at least obtain my MSN because I want to teach eventually!

Go for it, you got this!!!
