Starting nursing school at 37...

Published

Hi everyone. My name is Lindsay. I am 37 years old and I am married with 3 kids, boy/girl/boy ages 4, 10, 14.

3 years ago I decided I wanted to be a nurse. I began upgrading at my local college and took the required Math, Chemistry, English, Biology courses. It was a lot of work! Anyway, I got an offer a few months ago at a great college and am so excited! I accepted the offer and will be starting school in September.

The thing is, I wish I would have done this right out of high school while I was young. But back then, I wasn't serious about a career. I just wanted to get married and have kids. It wasn't until 3 years ago that I began desiring to go back to school and have my own career. It's just that I'm feeling kind of embarrassed to start at age 37...anyone else start nursing school in their 30's-40's? #justwondering

Hi! I am 41 and contemplating going back to school to become an RN.

You should do it! :)

My aunt started school at age 38

she had a 12 year old girl and had two kids while on nursing school

not to mention that her husband left her when she was pregnant with her third one!!!

she finished when she was 42 or 43

it was 12 years ago and she has been a nurse since then

I'm sure it was very hard for her but it worth it

good luck

I just turned 49 in June & I (hopefully) will be graduating in December this year! Advanced Med/Surg & Transitions... the struggle is real... are the only 2 (really 6 with theory, lab & clinicals) classes I have left in my ADN program...

This will be my second career. I presently work in the O.R. as a Surgical Technologist and I have dreamed of becoming a nurse for the past 25 years.

We have several other grads who are older then me, a good friend of mine just graduated, she's 60 & one, a Valedictorian, was in his 70's.

It has been a long, tired road and it has taken longer than I would have liked, but the key is to finish. You can do it!

Life experience (critical thinking) helps in clinicals and really everywhere. Figure out how you learn, form a study group, & read your butt off!

Good luck!

Hi Lindsay! I am finishing pre reqs, applying for nursing school in a month....and I'm 48! I, too, am married with kids and honestly, sitting in lab in my reading glasses with the twenty somethings is quite funny but I am having a blast! It's refreshing to be among them and to have a purpose-one that's all mine. Good luck!

I am in my 40s and starting an ADN program in a few weeks- I have wanted to pursue nursing for about 17 years but money, life, kids, etc all seemed to make me think it wasn't possible. I am scared to death but also very excited! Completing pre-reqs with 2 small children and a full time job did nothing but confirm this is what is right for me now..... :)

Specializes in Midwife, OBGYN.

Going into nursing now in my 30s so you aren't too old. I have also found the coursework for my pre-reqs much easier because I have actually worked and have gained experience through real world application. An example is the statistics pre-req I am taking now which most prospective nurses have to take in order to get into nursing school, if I had to take it 15 years ago I probably wouldn't have thought it easy but having actually used math in real life with real world applications, it makes it much easier to apply to the concepts and formulas. I just wish I had the same energy of my 20s combined with the knowledge I have gained in my 30s "laughs" when I actually get into nursing school but 1 out of 2 isn't bad.

Awesome! Good for you! Thanks for sharing! :)))

Way to go! Thanks for sharing! I am feeling nervous too, but mostly excited!! :)))

Thanks for sharing and good luck to you! :)))
