Staff Vaccines

Published

My state started phase 1B yesterday which includes childcare workers & K-12 staff.  Three of our nearby schools have either had their first vaccine clinic or set them up for this week.  I've been in contact with the dept of health, a local provider who is getting their documentation sorted out to give out vaccines, and a local pharmacy chain.  We don't have a date set yet.  I keep getting nasty emails from teachers implying I'm not trying hard enough.  I'm usually a tough person, but I just want to sit under my desk and cry.  I'm trying so hard.  I'm handling everything else--day to day stuff,  COVID stuff, my own personal stuff (obviously not handling "personal stuff" at work but I have some stressful things and that stress carries over), and now I'm being told I'm a ? nurse.  Mostly by those I rarely interact with.  The ones who I see daily are all just excited at the thought of a vaccine.  I'm sad and just needed to vent.

Teachers have been particularly hard this year. They're behaving like entitled little brats in some cases. I've never had my judgement questioned like I have this year. My administrator and I have been accused of 'hiding' Covid cases from them.  Teachers believe they have the right to know the names of any and everyone that tests positive on the campus. It's insanity.

It has been a year!! The union that wants no part of the nurses wanted a letter supporting their need to be remote.....Negative Ghostrider!

And as it turns out, what we in admin have been saying all along is that, at least here, there is very little in school transmission. There is substantial community transmission.

Yep, we've had a couple kids come up positive since October and they caught it from parents. Teachers are catching it from holiday and birthday parties. And they don't social distance at work, so then two or three teachers need to quarantine.

They are terrified when a kid sneezes, but hang out during lunch and after work at happy hours...  smh

On the flip side of all this, today I realized my school counselors, OT, PT, SLP meet the definition of a non-covid facing health care worker today per my state and can qualify for a vaccine appointment. They have actually been amazing and working in person with kids in situations where social distancing cannot always happen and looking into providing care at home for students not in person at school (I provide all the PPE, of course).

I don't get to write a lot of good emails lately, so this one will help!

My state bumped the teachers to Tier 2 and they are pissed.  I have forwarded vaccine events and web sites but only a few fit the 1b criteria.  Fortunately in my school I am not seeing spread.  I do see kids test positive after a weekend get together where they were exposed, or parent had lunch with sister and sister called positive.  These two situations masks are down, they are closer than 6 feet for longer than 15 minutes.

Prepare for the Superbowl & influx of dummies from those parties, and then Valentines dates because our single parents deserve this.

Yes we've had no known transmission within our school except for siblings & spouses (we have a few sets of married/dating teachers).  Our local health department has prioritized vaccinating the schools that have had outbreaks.  Our staff feels like they're being punished because our school is one of the few that haven't had to close again due to outbreaks.  It's been tough.  I wish I could get our teachers vaccinated sooner.
