Staff RNs in LTC

Published

Hi! I am new to this board. Are there any staff RNs out there in LTC? I live in FL. There have been so many changes recently and turnover at our facility...I am the only staff RN on 3 to 11...anyone else out there feeling this isolation..get along great with the staff, but other websites post you lose your clinical skills in LTC...and RNs should only be administrators in LTC...

I am moving to Ft. Myers area the end of the week and am an RN. I have always loved geristrics. May I ask where you work? I have always enjoyed the one on one with the residaents and wouldn't care for adm. I don't believe you lose all skills. You become very good at assesment of pt. You get to know these pts, and you will know if something is not right. Give yourself more credit. Elderly pts have so much to share and are so appreciative, keep up the good work. Don't listen to everyone else and do what you like best. Thay need you. K.Z.
tHANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT...i WORK AT A sEACREST MANAGED FACILITY...MY MAIN ISSUE IS THAT AS THE ONLY RN on my shift I am automatically the supervisor...and this is starting to feel and be too much liability....when i was hired there was another RN on my shift and she was the designated supervisor, my position is by default...anybody else out there in the same boat??

KZ..I hate to disallusion you, but in LTC there isn't much time for one on one with the residents...you have time to pass meds, do treatments, chart and that's about it.

I am an RN also on day shift and supervisor on weekends of a 216 bed facility and love it.

Cape Cod Mermaid, I have to respectfully disagree with you. I find time to spend one on one time with my residents. Yes I am always busy with meds and treatments but it is during this time that I spend one on one. I sit next to the resident while administering meds and talk. I spend a couple extra minutes while doing a dressing change talking with a resident. Your right, I don't have time to sit and have coffee with a resident but I make each resident feel like our interaction is one on one.

So, while the LPN is doing the work of two, the RN is reading magazines, and I mean that literally. They say, I can't get involved in anything, like giving a pain pill, or God forbid a bedpan., because something might come up requiring their expertise. How could they possibly leave in the middle of giving a pill to go to an emergency. The bottom line is the RN in my facility understands that the buck stops with the LPN. If the work isn't done, it's the LPN's fault and not the RN so why care? I am a RN and work at a LTC facility. I can't stand lazy people. It doesn't matter who they are. The RN is there to make sure that the job gets done. She needs to be there and help when things go wrong whether she likes it or not. If she is not doing her job I would suggest you go to your DON or Administrator about it first. If you do not feel comfortable doing that you can always call the state and do it in confidence, especially if there are patients who have decub, tears, falls, and there are excessive amts. of restraints. They come and find out what is going on. You can talk to them and tell them you wish not to leave your name.

Can I ask you all how much you make as a staff RN. I'm wondering if I get paid the right amount. I have been a RN for 7 yrs. The skilled LTC corporation is appx. 150 patients. I am the only RN besides the DON. I work 32 hpw, weekend doubles. I am starting school in Jan toward my BSN. Last year, I got a .50 raise, not even 3%. Feb. is my 3 yr. evaluation and I am curious. What do you all think?

I make $21.50/hr. Texas

I read your post and wanted to run something by you......since subacute care is busy. Do you think a 1:18 ratio on days is good on a subacute unit? Is it my imagination or by calling all RNs nursing supervisors that is a play to meet the regs by having a supervisor covering the house?

Also do you know if other facilities have the staff nurses take on call? If an STNA or nurse cannot come in that person is required to come in to cover. I have not heard of the floor nurses in a facility being required to do that but this venue is new to me. You are paid 100 for the weekend and if you come in you are paid as well. If you are short someone for both 12 hour shifts you and you cannot cover you are also required to work? Fishy?

Please snow if you can respond or anyone with more experience in this type of facility other than myself who has been an RN for many years just never worked in this type of setting before.

Hello all....I am an RN that just relocated to Jacksonville Florida from Indianapolis Indiana. I have worked in a LTC facility for the past 4 years. I am seeking employment as we speak in Florida as well as wait on my license to work in Florida. Anyways...I started off as a staff RN and worked the floor on 1st shift at that time I made $20/hr as time went on I became the MDS coordinator and pay increase to $25/hr which was okay because I was entry level and just beginning...I figured I'd get some experience in doing MDS's. Well MDS Coordinators with no experience in Indiana start off around $30/hr so of course I was being jipped from the start but what was really bad, I had to work every other weekend on the floor and every time a nurse called off..I was pulled to work the floor which kept me behind in my work. I am a hands on nurse and I love being around and laughing with the residents. I did not like being the MDS Coordinator at all. I have put in several apps at LTC facilities here in Florida and I am applying for a STAFF RN position. I have been reading that the pay here is lower..I have not been on any interviews yet but I will be finding out soon. I would like to know if anyone is from Jacksonville, Florida who knows the pay rate for RN's in LTC. Thanks in Advance Towanna RN
