OUCH!!

Just ordered my books for first semester (junior year). Came out to $661, saves $88 by getting them through amazon, and that was buying them new at amazon vs used at bookstore. Bonus was that if you have an .edu email address you can get a free year of amazon prime, and get free 2 day shipping.

So what did everyone else pay. :D

Reading all of your post about the cost of books, makes me so very happy that my books are figured into my tuition, and I do not have to worry about that expense, so are my scrubs. The only expense outside of my tuition that I have is the cost of my shoes and my stethoscope.

How much is your tuition?

How much is your tuition?

For the entire program it is 49,000.

Ah, well, my books and tuition for my entire program will be around $5,000. Maybe.

I needed 26 books, they were almost 2 grand at the bookstore. I am to cheap for that LOL! Luckily my husband had my back and ran across a girl who started my colleges program in 2009 and dropped out two weeks into the program and sold him every book (unused) for 150 dollars!! We he surprised me with all those books the next day, it was better then 3 dozen roses!!! :) I only had to update one book, which I did from Amazon.

Also I think some one already mentioned it but you can link you .edu email to your amazon account for free ptime shipping for a year. Another thing, is at amazon right now they are having a buy 3 get one free sale on those laminated study guides...the have med math, anatomy, pharmacology, every body system and a ton of nursing ones!

I lucked out and found a few ladies who were selling books... a friendof my mom's gave me a bunch of her nrsg books, and drug cards, whereas I found a lady online who purchased all the first year books for her daughter, but she had to drop out when she found out she was pregnant. I paid 150$ for the entire set, and purchased some second+ year books off another girl for 350$. I am hoping I got all the major books out of the way, and will only have to purchase a few extra... We will see!! I register for my courses monday, and will receive the book list then. (My school is VERY behind this year, after creating a new BN program...)

OMG- I'll be lucky to spend $10k for the whole deal! Might want to take a business course to manage those finances when you become an RN.

OMG.... for that kind of money they should rub your shoulders and carry you to class, You are probably going for a bachelor's degree. I think my total cost for the ADN program is roughly 8,000

I am working on my ADN. I quoted about $5000 for my program. Even if I were to get my bachelor's from the university where I earned my other bachelor's, it would only be about $8000 to 10000. No book costs, either, except for the $72 a semester rental fee!

From what I have seen on this forum about school costs, those of us in my area are dang lucky!

Wow!

My program is about $30,000 when you factor in all the costs! And that's only for the ADN portion! Add in the other 2 years, and it's another $50,000 in tuition, and then there's room and board (about $10,000/year -- so $40,000 total)...so we're talking a grand total of about $120,000 for me to obtain my ASN and BSN. (For those of you who don't know, my program is a 1+2+1 program -- so it's a joint program between a 4 year college and a 2 year college of nursing and the first year is spent at the 4 year doing prereqs, the second and third are at the CON doing nursing courses/clinicals and getting an ASN and sitting for the NCLEX, and the fourth year is back at the 4 year finishing up requirements for a BSN).

Yowch! I think my wallet just fainted!

WHAT would you need 26 textbooks for?!? Please tell me that's for the whole program..

For the first 11 of 15 weeks of fall semester I had to buy 2 books and a drug handbook, about $80 on Amazon.

What people are posting about textbook requirements is crazy.. Especially these bundle packs that schools require you buy from their bookstores. I really think that says something about the school and its attitude toward students.

It sounds like a lot of money up front, but when I graduate I will have my AS in Nursing.

Now lets look at this rationally. I do not have to pay for any books. I do not have to pay for any uniforms. I do not pay for the state test, the school covers that cost for me, plus they are a qualified testing site so I do not even have to drive to get to the RN test. I do not have to pay for and lab fees and I do not have to pay for any transportation cost to get to and from the hospital where my clinical will be at. Yes it is a private school so it is a bit more expensive.

But the local community college that offers the same two year AS program is 14,000 for the tuition of the whole program, roughly about $3,600 total for the books for the program. (that is an average amount it could be more depending on the cost of the books) there is the cost of uniforms which runs about $20 to $30 a pair that you have to buy. Then there are the lab fees which are roughly about $25 per class that you have to do labs for. And I do not know what the going rate for the state test are currently, but I know that for the CNA test (which is a much cheaper test, it cost $120 to take it and that does not include the fact that I would have to travel over three hours to take the RN test because the community college does not offer it and the closest test site is 3 hours away. Then there is the cost of gas for the car to get back and forth to and from clinical.

If you look at them in comparison it only makes sense to go to a school that is all inclusive. Plus let us not over look the fact that unlike some students, I did not have to wait on a waiting list. I did not have to take my pre-reqs first then hope that I got into the nursing program. I do not know anything about the ADN, but I can tell you that I would rather pay a little more for my AS degree than the typical student if it means that there are no surprises later on down the line. I am a single mother, I can budget for a college where everything is included, but I cannot budget if I do not even know how much the books for a specific semester is going to cost. Yeah you may think it is a lot of money, and you might not think it is worth the cost, and hey there is a message therapy class at my school so I can get free back rubs, but to me it is better than what traditional students are putting up with. I have gone to a traditional school and had to drop out because my books one semester cost over $300 which may not seem like a lot to a person who spends that much on a stethoscope, but to me that was too much to come up with. I do not want my nursing degree to end because I lack the funds to pay for it.
