Hello everyone, I am new allnurses.com. I am glad to see that there is a site where I can communicate with nurses from all over. I have a question. I recently applied to St joseph Hospital school of nursing located at 8th girard ave in philadelphia, PA. It is an accelerated one year RN program. I am somewhat concerned because I don't know much about the school. They don't even have a website. I wm currently working on prequisites to start the program in november. It is fairly new and just opened up about three years ago. I would love to get the input of someone that knows about the program or has graduated from it...thanks a lot.
Wow...that is crazy that you didn't get the sallie mae loan...the financial aid officer at St joseph makes it seem so easy to get one....She told me that most students have no problem...I guess it is diffrent this school year since many banks do not want to lend money any more due to the failing economy... I have an appointment with financial aid monday and I will see what happens....I will continue to search for scholarships and other means of tuituion assistance and if I find something I will pass the information along....I am hoping it works out...I will be hurt if I can't go because of money!
I know what you mean. I am feeling so down today. I was online looking for money yesterday. The problem I am having is when I go to the lender's websites or call them they don't have the school as a partipating school so they can't lend money. If you find or hear anything pass it and I will do the same. I refuse to give up. God didn't open this door to not let us walk in it.
Before you sign your name on the dotted line to attend Saint Joseph Hospital School of Nursing in Philadelphia, please read and reconsider. The first class started in October 2006 with 30 nursing students and graduated 20 students. The first class had a pass rate of 25% with first time Nclex test takers and as of this date only 11 students has passed the Nclex. This information can be verified through the state board of nursing. They needed a pass rate of 60% to receive full accreditation, with first time test takers. Therefore, this school is not accreditted. The second class started with 67 students and after the third semester they were down to 31 students. Also, there were 4 return students that entered the program, between second and third semester and not one student was successful, which was not totally the students fault, because there were no support given to the return students. Eleven students of color were dismissed and requested to see their final grades, as well as file a grievance. The students were denied and their rights were violated. What educational institution have you heard of, that would refuse to let students review their test or file a grievance? This is totally unethical practices. The first graduating class lost between 7-8 instructors, either they resigned and/or dismissed. The second class lost five instructors and the original dean after the second semester. Keep in mind the second class started on November 19, 2007 and was suppose to graduate on November 19, 2008, because it is a one year diploma program. However, third semester started six weeks late, because the school did not have instructors to teach maternity. The school had students attending classes, during the period when they knew that the school fail to provide the students with maternity instructors and the students did not receive any credit for being present, which was a waste of time. The school hired a new Resource Coordinator, after the previous person resigned and the person is suppose to offer tutoring for the students, but it is quite difficult for the students to receive tutoring when the person work hours are basically banking hours Mon.-Fri. between 9am-5pm. Students clinal hours were constantly changing, because the new Dean change policies quicker than you can imagine. The original contract stated that students should keep their schedule free, Mon-Fri between the hours of 8am-5pm, but maternity clinical hours were 6:45am-7pm. These hours made it difficult for the students that needed help to be able to schedule an appointment with the resource coordinator. A week before the third semester finals, the resource coordinator was on vacation and no-one was appointed to fill the position at a critical time, when students needed help. Also, keep in mind, students were told by the resource coordinator, not to mention to anyone that she is teaching, because she is only tutoring, but she taught how blood travels in the heart. What is the secret for, but I am assuming that the state board of nursing is not suppose to be informed. Also, the school has an instructor teaching a med surg. class and running a clinical for med surg., who has the background of a Psych Nurse and least to mention this person has not been in med surg. for over 30years. The lectures were of poor quality, because of the lack of experience that this individual have with med surg. Basically, you sit in lecture to listen to the instructor read phrases from the lecture book, which was presented in a powerpoint format. This instructor did not promote or enhance student involvement to get them to critically think or prioritize in a nursing perspective. Also, this instructor has a mobility problem, which makes it difficult for the instructor to mobilize an assess students and assist students with the skills that they need to be a successful nurse. If students do not gain the skills and educational training, that is needed to be successful is it the students fault along or one would think that it is a joint commitment. This is a inside source and this is the validity about Saint Joseph Hospital School of Nursing. So please do not take this information lightly, because I would hate to see others make the same mistake.
I am too aware of the things that was presented above. As a matter fact, most of them Mr. Bill Deane told me himself. I will say this, this is not the first nursing program that I have been in. About a year ago, I was singing the same tune about another program. What everyone needs to keep in mind is that nursing is a new way of thinking. Therefore you cannot go to class expecting that the information will be spoon fed to you. We have to take what the instuctors teach as being what we should really focus in on and teach ourselves because we are adult leaners. I'm not just saying this because this is how I feel. I'm saying this because you will find at least a couple of nursing students from any nursing program and they will have the same complaintbecause it's not easy. So I ask that those that were accepted, including myself, not get discouraged. Everyone didn't fail. We just have to strive to be one of the ones that were strong enough to survive the program and pass the nclex.
Good luck to everyone:wink2:
I agree with you. I too was in nursing school before and you are right you have to do a lot of work yourself. The ones that don't reach beyond the insturctor or lectures don't learn as much. We all learn different and an instructor can't reach all. YOU must ensure you are successful. Bill Deane told me most of the information too and I knew a couple of students so I knew from other students too. Bottomline is you most do what you need to do to get that RN license. It is to hard out here to get into an school. Nursing is HARD. You are caring for a life. Make your decision based on what is right for you and pray.
It is somewhat upseting hearing whats' actually going on in st Joseph, But at the same time I have no choice but, to take that chance..It is not easy quit now when you already taking prequisites, spend hundreds of dollars the application fees, net test, and backround checks....It not easy at all to get any program at this point and who knows when the next opportunity will come up for me... Myself like many other applicant have a lot riding on completing this program...I can't wait another two or three years to get accepted to another program that is going to take another 2 years to complete! My goal is to be one of the students who work hard and do well.... I refuse to flunk out... I refuse to allow the staff and teachers at the school to take my tuition money and not prepare me to be a nurse....I will ask hundreds questions if needed until I get an understanding of the material... I will harass Bill Deane and the other staff there until I get what I need!..I appreciate informing us whats going on in the school, but for most of us who invested our time and money it is too late to turn around.:(
